Kids lunches...storage

Dd is going to full day (3 days a week) preschool this year and she needs to bring a lunch.  What kind of lunch boxes do you kids use?  Dh wants to let her pick her own; which is find but I also want it to hold up/keep the cold in.  Do you use reusable containers like bento boxes?  I would like to use reusable things but I'm afraid they won't make it back home.

Re: Kids lunches...storage

  • I just let Jake go to the store & pick out a lunch box (he chose Cars, which was not surprising!).  I just made sure he was only looking at the insulated options.  He got it last summer, so he's used it for a little over a year and it's held up fine, it's just now getting a little tear in it along the back outside around the handle.  But, I paid like, $8 for it, and figured he'd want a new one this year for kindergarten anyway, so I'm ok wtih getting a new one.

  • Each kid has an insulated lunchbox that I picked out (mean mommy). They are just a solid color and the smallest size that was available, purchased at Target.

I have 6 reusable fabric bags and a bunch of plastic containers with lids and two small thermos containers. (All bought at Target, too) The containers are three different sizes - the large is about the size of a sandwich and the smaller are 1/2 and 1/4 of the large one.

Everything is labeled with our last name and I've never had trouble getting all the containers back. Our center is pretty "green", though, so they prefer reusable over disposable.

  • My mom just got my nephew a planet box. But his is from Pottery Barn Kids, my sister also got one to take her lunches to work. They aren't cheap but he had an older PBK lunch bag and it has lasted 3 years.

My sisters also had LL Bean lunch bags that that they liked.

  • we've always used the lands end lunch boxes - we get them at the start of the year and they have lasted all last year & Eamon will use his again. They hold up really well I think.    Then I use small Tupperware containers for everything inside or foil or whatever.  I always get my stuff back (and I don't put his name on anything inside exc. cup).

  • Right now we are using insulated lunch bags from PBK, they are a year and a half old and have held up well.  As for inside the bags, we have a nice set of sturdy plastic containers that my mom bought (I can't remember the name of them).  We have our name bubbles labels on them, and have never had a problem with them being returned to us.
  • Oh yeah, I just use small tupperware or take & toss containers inside.  I have labels on Liam's (never ordered labels for Jake, so I just write on his with a sharpie) and for the most part, we haven't had any trouble.  sometimes they might mix up containers, but we have always ended up having ours returned back to us.

I wanted to get the pbk lunch box because I thought it would last and last but dh said I was being mean and I should just let her pick a character one.  If I have to see Cinderella's face every night while packing lunches I think I might vomit.    I'm glad to know your kids all bring containers home.  I think that reusable is the best way to go.
