I like your grey but I think you need a bolder color on top, maybe even a modern wall paper. I really think this color would look nice "peacock blue" by valspar at lowes
Add a funky shoe cabinet against the wall (very thin, wont stick out into hallway)

Here's what ideas that come to my mind. Use the color, Virtual Taupe by Sherwin Williams under the chair rail. Then use the color 2 shades lighter above it (not sure the specific name). Or you can do just 1 shade lighter, if you like darker colors.

Then put a furniture piece like this against the wall under the staircase:
Or this if you want more storage:
Then I would put a larger mirror above the table.
On the small space between the 2 doors, I would put a plant table and a tall skinny vase on it. Similar to this one, but with a tall vase and plant on it. Or you can leave it blank if you're afraid you would hit it walking by (not sure how much traffic is in that space). If you left it empty, then I would definitely put a frame on the wall in that space.
I would also put a wedding picture to the left of the door that has windows in it. I am assuming this picture is taken from right when you walk in the door, and I'm a sucker for people seeing a wedding or family pic as they walk into a home. Or you can leave that space blank if you feel it's too clutered with the mirror on the wall next to it.
You could also keep the decor very simple by just placing a coat rack in the back corner, and maybe a simple chair under the stairs. Then guests have a spot to sit and put their shoes on, and a place to hang their jackets (not sure on your storage space).
