Anyone from Baltimore area?

I know we have quite a few East coasters on this board, but is anyone from Baltimore or the surrounding area?

We found out this weekend that our Tastefully Simple conference is there next year. So H and I are trying to figure out whether or not we should make a vacation out of it. What is there to do in that area?  The conference is Thursday - Sunday. So those days I'm in meetings from 8:30-5. We have discussed going a day or 2 beforehand, or possibly the Saturday before and having Sat-Wed to do some sightseeing.  Any recommendations and is it worth going early? All I care is that I get some great seafood (from the midwest).

  • I'm not from Baltimore, but I've been there a couple of times. The Inner Harbor area is fantastic for vacationers. There's the Baltimore aquarium, which is phenomenal. And I believe blue crabs are HUGE in Maryland, so there's your great seafood fix!

I know there's more, I just can't think of anything else (unless you guys are into baseball and want to catch an Orioles game (if you're there during the season).

  • Mmm blue crab. Now I'm hungry!

H would go for the baseball game, and I would deal with it for the few hours. The only thing I was really finding was Inner Harbor. So then we were thinking about just me going with the rest of the girls on Wednesday and not using it as a vacation. I wanted to make sure that we weren't discounting some other great things to do in the area. Since I will already be there.

  • I'm not that far away from Baltimore a little over an hour away. if you're going to Baltimore the other girls have named lots of fun things to do there. and Annapolis is beautiful and I love love it there. jealous of @LooneyLife you should go there while you're visiting Baltimore

  • The Inner Harbor is the big tourist thing to do because there is a lot of stuff within walking distance. Camden Yards is so much fun and a beautiful ball park even if you aren't into baseball.  There is the aquarium, air and space museum, some really good restaurants and a lot of fun bars and clubs (Power Plant Live is popular for that).  Little Italy has yummy restaurants.  You can visit where Edgar Allan Poe is buried and there is the Babe Ruth birth place and museum.  There is a Ripley's Believe it or Not and the Baltimore Zoo is really nice.   Oh yeah, and you could meet me! lol.  There is definitely enough to do for a mini vacation.

  • Thanks @Xan921!  I'm definitely going to bring all of these ideas to H's attention and see if he wants to plan on joining me.  Thankfully it isn't till next August, so we have plenty of time to decide. I am just a big planner, and the east coast is one of those "wishlist" vacations for us (mostly fall time though).  So we may take advantage of already being there and rent a car to tour on up to Maine.

  • There are several GPers in Baltimore, that is why our first epic GTG was there! I go to Baltimore 4-5 times a year. There is plenty to do there for a vacation & lots of fantastic restaurants. Washington D.C. Is also a quick train ride away (It was $8pp each way) and is worth doing if you have time. The national mall with all the museums/monuments is an easy walk from the train station.

I grew up in B'more! All of the things Xan mentioned are great, and there are a bunch of historic sites too, if you like that sort of thing, like Fort McHenry (where the national anthem was written!), and the USS Constellation, a battleship that you can tour. The harbor has all sorts of fun water things, too, like paddle boats or dinner cruises. I bet you could make a fun week out of it :)

H saw those last night when he was looking up things to do. He sounded like a little kid when he asked if we could go.

  • I went for a work conference a few years ago and ended up extending the trip to spend an extra weekend.  I went to DC and LOVED it.  I could move there.  If you get a chance to drive to DC and spend a day or two, do it.

Baltimore seemed nice too, but I was with work people and forced to do work things.  I didn't really see it.
