Changing Baby in Public

I feel like this topic goes hand in hand with the BF'ing in public because it is one of baby's needs and it is natural. So his does GPM feel about changing baby in public?

Re: Changing Baby in Public

  • I very much appreciate the places that have the changing stations in the public bathrooms. I am offended by the places that only have one in the lady's bathroom. If there is no public bathroom around or no changing station then I make it work. I try to be modest for my daughter and go to our car or a quiet area. I have gotten some nasty looks changing her on the bathroom counter or next to a park bench but what do people expect? I also always put her changing mat down. Oh and if it is a stanky poopy diaper I try to get away from all people.

  • I've done it in their car seat in a Costco section, it wasn't my cup of tea and id rather be in a restroom. However I'm not ever going to let them sit in a mess.
I'll never forget when a friend changed her son on my kitchen table... I would never.
    Ever. Ew.

  • Oh my...the kitchen table? I steer clear of all food related areas. Also, people seem disturbed that I change her on the floor. I never thought anything of it.

I haven't put as much thought into this. My initial reaction is that I don't feel like feeding your kid and changing your kid are the same. I certainly wouldn't change my child near people who are eating. There are smells and the potential to get poop on a surface etc. I will try to be respectful with this but that being said, I will much rather change my kid on a park bench than walk around for a half hour trying to find a bathroom. And those people who give dirty looks when you change your kid on a bathroom counter because there was no changing table can go F themselves. My kitchen counter is not open for diaper changing.

  • Yeah I wouldn't say feeding and changing are the same situation because of the cleanliness issue that comes with changing but I think from the sense that a dirty diaper is nothing to be embarrassed of and that it is a necessity.

  • I have changed her in the grass, on the floor, in her car seat while in the bread section of Wegmans... I do it very discreetly and quickly. It's not like I get poop and pee everywhere. I always put a mat down.

  • Oy!  I hate it when places don't have changing tables or at least a place in the bathroom (counter or whatever) to change!  If I have to do it in public, I try to find a spot away from most people because nobody wants to see baby poop.

  • It angers me when places don't have changing stations. I changed her last weekend on the seat of a booth in Pizza Hut. I always look for a bathroom, but if you aren't kid friendly I'll just do it in the middle of your establishment. I dare them to say something about it.

  • If I'm not near a bathroom with a changing area I have changed him in the car or on the grass. It drives me crazy when a place doesn't have a chancing table in the bathroom. I'm looking at you Starbucks!

I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love.
  • I have changed her in the car, in bathrooms on the changing table or the sink counter with a pad, on the ground, on couches and floors. Anywhere that isn't an eating surface.

I really dislike that they don't put changing tables in men's bathrooms as much. DH has L 2 days a week and it can make their outings rather complicated. He tries to time it so they're never out long enough that he'd need to change her away from home, and that makes me sad.
  • It is ridiculous that they don't have them in the men's room. I have had DH take her to change her and come back and say you have to do it because there is a koala on the Women's room door. Luckily he is willing to change her outside or in the car if he is out alone.

I just think it definitely pushes the gender stereotypes though and that really irritates me. Like a dad isn't going to change his baby but a mom is. Yuck.

  • @Alexisanna44 I have changed R's diaper in lots of places too because of no changing station.  I don't see what the big deal is for them to put one in!  It folds up against the wall!!  I also hate that there are very few men's restrooms with changing stations.  We don't even bother having W try changing in public unless we're already doing it in the car/grass/bench/etc because there isn't any changing stations at all.
