Prepaid or no contract phones?

I'm the only mama in town without a smart phone. I'm home and just dont have it in my budget. Right now, I have a cheapo Virgin Mobile call plan which is being retired. I'm looking for an inexpensive talk/text plan without a contract. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Re: Prepaid or no contract phones?

  • My husband is happy with his Walmart/Straighttalk cell phone and service.
  • We have virgin mobile plan for the iPhone. Had to buy the iPhones outright, but the plan is only $35 a month per phone.

  • My mom and brother use www.tracfone.com to get their phones and buy minutes.
  • I do not have a smart phone.

I use a basic Trac Phone - phone minutes average $10 a month (triple minutes card).  I cannot justify the cost of a smart phone and it use (and I can well afford it).

  • Neither my husband nor I have a smart phone. Our priorities have been buying a house (3 weeks ago!!) and now it will be saving to start a family and an eventual maternity leave. We have a plan with Sprint and we pay $110 for 3 phones (my mother is on our plan as well and she gives us her portion for the year).  We have our plan because neither one of us has a job where we can take phone calls. I'm a teacher, he's a state employee, but travels 30% of the time. We had the no plan phones before and didn't like them. We ended up spending more money than necessary.
  • we have t-mobile without a contract. We pay about $100 for unlimited everything (text, talk, data) for the two of us. we had to own the iphones (and unlock them) to qualify. it is nice not to have a contract!

  • DH has T-Mobile for $70/mo including taxes (with data).  In October his contract will end and we're going to switch to Straight Talk (from Walmart) and it'll be $41/mo + taxes.  I think you can get Straight Talk (still with data but limited) for $30/mo + taxes.
