Does anyone remember... (infant feding schedule)

How often you feed an 8-mo old with table foods? I swear Sean is either going through a growth spurt or has a tapeworm, but I swear I could feed him table foods 3x a day, which seems like too much.

Right now he gets up and has a bottle or breakfast (depending on the time he gets up and what we're doing - ie. feeding the other two breakfast). Right before he goes down for a nap (about 2.5 hrs later), he eats a 6oz bottle. His feeding is every 4-5 hours then throughout the dayt.

I guess I ask bc he ate a LOT for dinner last night (puffs and mashed potatoes) and was flipping out about 20 minutes later, so we gave him a 5oz bottle. He was wide awake for about another 30 minutes, then crashed around 7:15p. He woke at 1a for a bottle, then back asleep until 4:30. I let him chill/squeal in his crib until I got up with him at 5:30. He had a bottle around 6:30a, went down for a nap at 7, and now is back up. (And he normally naps around 2-2.5 hrs each time.)

We start daycare tomorrow and I wonder if I should send 1 or 2 meals (breakfast and lunch) and 2-3 bottles? Maybe give him a bottle upon waking up, then let them give him breakfast at dc before nap. That sholuld tie him over until lunch (solids) and then bottle before afternoon nap?

Does that sound like too much food or should I wait and do solids for dinner over lunch?

Re: Does anyone remember... (infant feding schedule)

  • I let EJ's first meals be while she was at school (cause then I didn't have to deal with it...hahaha) so she was doing something like breakfast and lunch at school. But always offered bottles there first before solids. so I think I sent 3 bottles in most days for a long while. I also nursed her before and after work. Especially around that age. Her solid food intake was pretty low and wasn't really eating "dinner" at home regularly until she was a little older. Remember solids are for practice at that age and formula/milk should be the primary source of calories.
  • Your last line, about their primary source of calories, is something I forgot. So, thank you!

I think I'm going to follow what you did - at least for breakfast/ mid morning snack. I like giving him a bit more at night because he's already waking up once a night as it is....!

    Thanks for your feedback!

  • I think by the time both of my boys were 8 months old they got 3 meals a day.  They still had bottles as their main source of food, but were also getting a veggie and fruit (I think, I can't remember now!) with us during meals.
  • Ditto, giving him the bottles first.  Both my boys were different at this age.  With Mason we just experimented with table foods, but he was mostly interested in his bottles.  With Garrett, he loved eating and was always looking for something to snack on after his bottles, so he usually got something small with each meal (or one larger "meal" a day).   At least that's what I remember!

I think this is about right.  I would do oatmeal morning, fruit lunch, veggie dinner...all after the bottle

  • I am an expert at remembering stupid little tidbits like that clare. And still forget the more regularly useful information, like navigating the roads near my house.
  •  think by 8 months Adam was eating 3 meals. but it was always nurse first and then eat. Just what he would eat. cereal and I used to add a little  blended fruit to make it more interesting for breakfast, then something small for lunch- like fruits  for lunch and then some sorta meal for dinner.

Always always formula/milk first then foods until a year.

Then I would give Adam whole milk for each meal. and at bed time and a little water through the day.  We hardly ever had juice... he is a big water kid. Still is and now I buy V8 Fusion and try to get him a glass a day because he eats 3 things =(

  • I remember my pedi telling me that by 9 months 50% of the ounces should come from formula/breast milk and 50% from food.  I know we didn't meet that goal but I do recall giving her solids 3x/day.
  • My kids were as different as night and day.  We offered DD oatmeal and purees, but she would never eat more than 1/4 of a jar, right up until 9 months where she refused them entirely.  She did much better with table food at 9 months.

Nolan loved his purees, and at that age we were doing oatmeal mixed with bm and 1/4 of a fruit pouch for breakfast.  The rest of the first pouch and a second pouch at lunch time.  He still got 3 bottles at daycare (along with his food).

He was slower to pick up on self feeding, so at dinner he practiced with puffs, peas and corn and just nursed.  Around 10-11 months is when he started eating table foods for dinner regularly.

  • Thanks for all of your feedback! Conall is just like Gavin re: food. He wants what we're having and throws a fit when the food "goes away". That's why I can't figure how to feed this kid!
