Annual Exam Paranoia

I was just talking to a friend and casually mentioned that I am going in for my annual routine gyno exam and pap smear tomorrow. It's been over a year and both my OB and RE (whom I both trust) recommended that I get one. My friend started going on and on about how annual exams are just a conspiracy for doctors to make money. She said that she has done "tons of research" and that pap smears cause incompetent cervix and breast and pelvic exams can cause cancer.

I am highly skeptical. I have known this person for a long time and while I love her, she can be quite the drama queen. She is very distrustful of doctors. I've learned to take some of the things she says with a grain of salt.

Anyone else heard these theories?

  • Yeah ok - getting felt up causes cancer!  That's so far-fecthed that they didn't use that as a deterrent in sex ed in Catholic school!

This was my thought too. So my husband giving me foreplay is causing cancer? What?

  • Wow. Um, no. I've worked for all kinds of doctors and the annual is preventive maintenence. (I can just not make that word look right, I know it's not spelled properly). That's like saying going in for your quarterly oil changes is causing your cars parts to wear out too soon. Unrelated.

  • LOL. Breast exams cause cancer huh? I think she is confused. Just because these things all are capable of finding cancer does not mean that they cause cancer! Some people are a little looney.

  • Pap smear recommendations for determining cervical cancer:

Screen with Pap smear: initiate no sooner than 21 years of age; test every 3 years thereafter or, for women aged 30- 65 years who want to lengthen the duration of screening, every 5 years if combined with HPV testing. Screening is not indicated in women following hysterectomy and without previous high-risk Pap smears. Screening may be discontinued at age 65 years in non–high-risk women with no recent abnormal Pap smears.

This is straight from the USPSTF screening recommendations.

Your friend is being a wacko, lol.

Yeah same here. She has unfortunately had some losses (similar to myself) and blames her doctors. There may or may not be some truth there, but she is really taking it too far.
