Can I cry now? :( UPDATE

I have been battling a new type of headache the past two weeks. At first I thought I just slept wrong, since my neck was sore, but it has progressed to a full on daily headache that hurts on my entire left side of my head. Everything from under the base of my skull all the way to my eye, and sometimes my left ear and left nostril. I have tried caffeine, which usually does the trick, drinking water, and even a chiro adjestment and massage, but it just seems to come and go as it pleases. Usually triggered by artificial light (computer,TV, phone). Last night I couldn't fall asleep for over an hour because it was so painful to sleep on my head. The only thing that seemed to give me some relief was either sleeping on the back of my head or tilting my head to the left.

Migraines/severe headaches run on both sides of my family. They are so bad on my mom's side that my aunt actually blacked out while driving and hit the center divide. Luckily she was okay. My dad gets them really bad too. So I guess I'm just doomed. :(

Is this something I should bring up to my OB? Or should I just go to my primary care? I would like to find some relief, but I have a feeling I won't be able to do much until after little miss gets here.

Sorry for the long vent/rant, I'm just miserable right now...
UPDATE: I am home now. They basically said since my blood work was normal there was nothing they could do. So I'm still in pain, with nothing to help it and no answers on what is causing it. :(

  • I'm sorry - that is so debilitating :(  I would bring it up to your OB.  After you have the baby, I would also see a neurologist.  You can mention it to your PCP if you are seeing her anyway, but really a neurologist can help you the most.  I hope it subsides soon!

  • I'm sorry you are going through this. :(

I hope you feel better soon!
  • Thanks ladies! It just worries me a little bit because I did have a concussion around 15 weeks, even though I know it's kind of late to be related to that. And I had skull surgery as an infant, so it's always a little concerning when I have head problems...I just thought it would have gone away by now, but it's been almost 2 weeks exactly. :(

  • OK, well if you had a concussion only 3 months ago and you have had this level of headache for 2 weeks, I think it is really important for you to go to the ER or make an appointment with a neurologist (or PCP) for early next week.  Head injury is really important to treat correctly and the symptoms you are feeling and really quite severe!

  • You think it could be related to the concussion? I thought it was too far back to be related. I'll call just to be safe though. Thanks!

  • I am not sure, but it can't hurt to see.  Sydney Crosby didn't play hockey for almost 2 years because of a concussion!

  • I was just looking up post-concussion syndrome and I guess a lot of people were diagnosed with it up to 6 months after their concussion. So I guess it can be related, or it could just hormones. It's so hard to know. I'm waiting for the nurse to call me back, so hopefully they will have some answers.

Thinking back I did hit my head slightly to the left of center on the back of my head, so it is odd that I am having left sided pain now, and does make it seem likely to be related. I guess I'll wait and see what the nurse says.

  • That sounds awful. :-/ I hope it's just hormones and nothing more!

it wasn't exactly 2 years. more like half of a season. tomato, tomoto. ;)

i would call your OB. see if they will RX you something. i took imitrex all through pregnancy because of my chronic daily migraines, but they tapered off around 21w. there are lots of other things that you can take though that are RX'd but safer than imitrex (phenegren, fioricet).
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • I'm at L&D, my BP was 143/85 when I got here, which is super high for me, but it's gone down a little. They paged the OB so I'm sure they'll run more tests soon. I'll keep you updated.

My blood work was normal and my blood pressure has gone back to normal. They did say I was having contractions on the monitor, but they didnt say of they were consistent or anything. So probably just BH, cuz I only felt one or two semi painful ones. Just waiting to hear from the doctor now.

  • Oh no. I hope you feel better soon. Let us know what's going on.
  • All they could say was its probably just one of those weird pregnancy headaches...I'm just frustrated cuz I'm still in pain and don't really know why.

  • That sounds so painful. I'm really sorry you are going through this :(
  • I'm so sorry. :( migraines suck. I've suffered from them for years.

During this pregnancy, I've gotten them less frequent but they are definite stronger.

My perinatologist said that for many women, the frequency and severity of migraines increases during pregnancy. I hope you find some relief soon.

    T&Ps coming your way!!

  • Sorry you didn't get any answers last night. :( I hope you are feeling better this morning!

  • I'm so sorry :( it can be so frustrating but you have to remember that L&D specializes in certain high risk things and l&d so they may not be the best people to diagnose. They made sure you and baby are safe and that was the most important thing. I would definitely talk to your OB and possibly even your primary care. Hope that you can figure out what is wrong and get some relief! Feel better!

  • Thanks ladies! I am just thankful that I don't have pre-e. They were concerned about that when I got there, but luckily my BP came back down. I'll be calling my OB on Monday to see if they have anything I can try. Lb also gave me some great suggestions that I'll be trying over the weekend, so hopefully I'll find something that works or at least makes it tolerable for another 6 weeks.
