garbage disposal and dishwasher

I often think my dishwasher and g disposal give off a bad odor, sometimes sewer like. We dont use our dishwasher all the time so I wonder if the lack of continous usage has anything to do with it. Can you recommend what I can do to keep it fresh? Also, I have dropped fresh lemon down my garbage disposal but would welcome other ideas/tips on keeping these odor free/clean. TIA

Re: garbage disposal and dishwasher

  • I occasionally run an empty cycle with only vinegar poured in the bottom of the dishwasher.  You can also let vinegar or bleach sit in the drain over night and flush w/ hot water in the morning.

My garbage disposal backed up into my dishwasher before and that left an awful odor.  A repairman said the piping between the two wasn't laid right which caused it.

  • Run a vinegar wash through the dishwasher now and then. If the pipes dry, sewer gas can come up. I use vinegar and baking soda in my garbage disposal to keep it smell free. I also do lemon now and then. They all work fine.
