Determining baby's position

Can this only be done via u/s? At our first OB appt, they mentioned that we would only have two u/s throughout the whole pregnancy... the dating u/s in first tri and the a/s. We actually got a third only because of my surgery.

How do they determine the baby's position closer to delivery? Just by exam?

No real reason for this question other than curiosity.

Re: Determining baby's position

  • Every time I go in for my follow ups my doctor measures my tummy and after that she pushes down and feels with her hands, then she always tells me, "She's head down".

I guess they just know by touching your tummy and pushing down. :-/
  • I can tell based on my little ones movements that she is head down with her feet on my right side. She occasionally turns so back is against mine and kicks straight out on my tummy, but she is mostly turned to my right. My OB has never mentioned anything about her position, but I know she is ready to go and in the right position. ;)

  • I could tell just by feeling him through my stomach (and feeling his movements).

  • I cannot tell at all! His movement is all over the place. He's more of a squirmer than a kicker so I feel him in multiple places at once every time. His hiccups seem to be lower and to the left. At my a/s he was horizontal with his head on the left, facing my ribs.

I can feel lumps when he stretches out but I have no clue whether it's head, leg, butt. I'm impressed that you ladies can decipher that!

  • My doc told me besides feeling they can also tell by where they find the heartbeat.

  • I honestly have no idea what position baby is in. I almost always have a lump rigt under my boobs, and another lump down lower on my stomach, but I couldn't tell you if it was a butt or a head.

I'm also just like @madeline10L, she gets the hiccups a lot and they are always very low.

@caseyandlizzie I also feel movement right under my boobs but I can't tell what it is. I assume its her butt or legs since my doctor always tells me she's head down.
  • I tried the spinning babies website to figure it out but I never knew what was going on. I did have one ultrasound near the end because the doctor thought he might have his hands above his head.

  • My doctor said DS was head down by feeling my belly.

When I was admitted they did a quick u/s to verify.

  • My midwife could tell once I got closer to 40 weeks. I could tell too. I actually went into one appointment and said, "I think the butt is here and feet are here." And I was right. Once I started getting cervical checks my midwife could feel her head! So we knew she was head down.

  • My mom said they always did it by feeling your belly and was surprised they hadn't done that. So when she went with me to my 33 WK appt she asked and because he checked me he knew she was head down and her butt was on my right and her feet on my left. She was always in that position. She got stuck head down and when she came out she had a huge lump on her head from being in my pelvis for so long!

I used to cradle her butt and tickle her feet. Oh and I felt hiccups in my butt, haha! I never felt her in my ribs and I rarely had kicks and stuff above my belly button!

Thank you for suggesting that! I read their descriptions for the 4 quadrants... I think I have a smaller understanding for it but that's a lot of information to take in.

I tried feeling around and based on their theory of the "bulge" I think I at least know where his butt is now. Very cool!

  • My doctor has a little hand held ultrasound thing she uses at every appt. We get to see baby at each appt. She can tell where the head is by that. She also said that up above my belly button where there was a hard little bump, it was his butt also showing that he was head down.
