Dinner and sports

I’m just curious how others deal with this. Both Heather and Todd will be playing soccer this fall. A weeknight practice and a weekend game. Thankfully, we’ve been able to get them on teams that practice the same night and have games the same day, though I’m sure we’ll have Saturdays when their games are hours apart.

Anyway, I’m trying to come up with a reasonably healthy way to feed all of us that doesn’t involve fast food every Thursday night, every single week. (Last year it was just Heather, so I would pick Todd up and we would make dinner during her practice, and eat as soon as DH and Heather got home.

I’m thinking that maybe I’ll pack a picnic the night before a few times. I can do crockpot meals, but we always need sides to go with them…

Any other brilliant ideas or are we stuck with convenience foods and fast food on soccer nights?

On a similar note, I can’t even imagine if our kids were doing more than one sport/activity or if they were doing a sport that practiced multiple times a week. Although I’m sure we’ll get there someday…

Re: Dinner and sports

  • I would probably make sandwiches/wraps ahead of time and have them packed with some fresh fruit/veggies to eat along the way in the car.

If you have a bit more time, tacos/burritios are really quick and can be made up ahead of time.  For crockpot meals/sides, I would grab some of the steam-able veggies for a quick side to the meat.

  • We never did fast food, but we did do convenience food like PB&J or granola bar w/fruit on days we had to go straight from daycare pick up to the field.  We did left overs or something quick like mac & cheese on days we were able to fit in dinner before going to the game/practice.  Dinner is neither of their best meals, so I was okay on skimping 1x a week knowing that their breakfast/lunches were better planned.  As they get older and more involved in activities, I'm sure dinner will become a more frequent "on the go" type of meal, but I'll just focus on their breakfast/lunches being better planned and making sure we don't become reliant on fast food.
  • On the night a week dd has an evening activity we are usually rushed as well. I've been doing sandwiches and fruit/veggies. When dh was playing softball we would pack a picnic like this and take it with us to watch his game. Dd always enjoyed it.

  • We do quick dinners like sandwiches, yogurt, fruit or cereal as well.  Usually Noah is hungry after practice/game as well, so I'll make him a heartier snack when we get home, too.
  • Well, practice starts at 5:30, so there is no way to do dinner before. I'll make sure DH has something in the car that they can eat before practice like a granola bar. We're both going to have to leave work early to make this work, leaving even earlier to feed the kids dinner first would make this undoable. Especially because Todd eats soooooo slooooowly. :-)

If I pack dinner, we can stay at the park to eat until all of the traffic eases up. If we go home to eat, we'll get there at 7...but I guess we could do cereal with scrambled eggs or something super fast like that.

And good point, Megan, about dinner not being their best meal!

  • On dance night I usually just have a snack for EJ to have before class and then I just leave her there and pick her up when it is over and I start dinner during class.  Sitting through her dance class is torture to me, mother of the year! I tell her it is so I can be surprised at the recital. Plus she pays attention more when I am not there.
  • lol Amanda! I think that makes total sense to be surprised at recital:)

I feel like eggs are our big go-to on busy nights. Spice it up with bagel sandwiches one week or something like that! But I definitely like the idea of wraps and fruit and stuff for a picnic! I may have to do that while we still can with the weather! Great question!

  • rotisserie chicken!   You can do so many things with it.  Eat it hot as a "real" dinner, chicken salad, or throw it on a bun.  I found this on pinterest http://pocketchangegourmet.com/25-easy-recipes-using-rotisserie-chicken/

  • Sandwiches and fruits/veggies was my first thought, too. You could play around with breads/wraps, and do cold cuts, egg salad, tuna salad for the "meat" of the sandwich.
