Re: QOTD 8/19

  • Both of our families live about an hour and a half away.  we are from neighboring hometowns in NE Ohio and now live in Pittsburgh.

I think we are the perfect distance.  We get home often enough but it doesn't feel like everyone is always in our hair.  I would like to be a bit closer to my family when we have children, but I'd like to be a bit further away from H's family when we have kids (long story, my in-laws are terrible people).

  • We share a home with my mom for financial reasons on both parts and its fine. Sometimes we all wish we had more privacy but the help is nice :)

My dad lives 1hr 1/2 away with his girlfriend and I don't get to see him much which sucks but it is what it is

Hs parents live 20 min away and its great! We are separate enough but also close enough in case of emergency! They also get to see the kids a lot bcs they are close
  • My parents are 700 miles away in Michigan. H's mom about 1.5 hours away and his dad is in NC about 5 hours away. At times, his mom being that close is far too close! But mostly, I think a few hours is a good distance.

My parents and sister live about 10 minutes away.  We (especially I) get along good with my family so it's not a problem.  I think it'll be helpful when the baby is here, especially after DH goes back to work (he gets 2 weeks paid off).  My sister is getting married in November and she will be moving in with her fiance.  They will be about 30 min away.  DH and I are moving mid to late November and my parents will be about 25 min away and my sister and her husband will still be about 30 min away.

DH's family is all over the place.  His parents live in Florida and we're in Pittsburgh, so about a 2 hour flight?  Something like that.  He has a brother, sister in law, and niece who live about 15 minutes away and another brother and sister in law who live about 20 minutes away.  Both of these will be slightly longer when we move.  He also has 2 sisters (and their families) that live about 3 hours away (one in Harrisburg and one in Virginia).  And a sister in law and niece (brother passed away) about 4 hours away in Ohio.

My Mom and H's parents all live in the same town as us. My Mom is about 5 minutes away, which is nice at times, but it can be too close at others.

H's parents are only about 10 minutes away, and with all the drama they have going on, that's way too close for me most days.

ETA: Our siblings all live in the same town as us, too. My youngest brother and I get along great, so I don't mind having him close (he still lives at home with Mom), but my middle brother and H's sister are both drama queens, so I tend to keep my distance.

  • My parents are about 20 minutes away in one direction and H's are 20 min in the other, I'm really close with my family so I am usually always there, plus they live 5 min from where I work so its convenient to stop by after. We see H's family every once in a while, but since the baby came its now every weekend.
My sister and BIL are about 35 min away and we usually see each other all the time, whether they come to us, we go to the them or meet in the middle at our parents house.
H's sister lives in MD with her husband, about 5 hours away, and honestly i love it that way=)

  • My in-laws live next door. Works for me as I'm never home so I hardly see them. My parents live about 20 minutes away. I try to go out for dinner once a week or so.

  • My parents and DH's mom both live about 20-25 minutes away.  It is the perfect distance.  All of my siblings live out of state.  I do wish my brother lived closer though.  He lives in LA and we live in NY.

  • My dad, step-mom, and grandpa live just over an hour away, which is a little too far. We're able to see each other monthly. It's hardest on my grandpa, as he lives alone, I'm his only grandchild, and he's too old to travel the distance by himself (he's 90). My step-brother goes to college right down the road from our house, but we rarely see him, and my step-sister lives 2,600mi away, which is too far as I'd like to be closer to her (physically and emotionally).

H's parents and 3/5 siblings live about 40 minutes away, which is a comfortable distance. With the majority of them living so close to each other, there's a lot of drama, so I'm glad to be removed as it allows us to enjoy our time together. We see them at least once a month for niece/nephew birthdays, family dinners, and H's gigs. H's oldest brother lives 3hrs away and next oldest lives 20min away, but we rarely see them.
  • My parents live about 45 minutes from our house, but H and I work with my mom and dad, so we see them just about every day.  A lot of my dads side of the family live in the Austin area, and we are all withing 30-45 minutes of each other.  We all like to get together a lot and we don't have any family drama, so it's nice.  My brother lives with my parents.

H's mom and dad live about 5 hours away, which is too far.  We would like for them to come live with us because his dad is older and should be living with someone full time that can take of him.  H's sister lives about 3 hours from us and about 2 hours from their parents.  My MIL lives between H's sisters house and their house because she helps H's sister with her kids sometimes.  She also has more clients in that area, so it's easier for her to get to different appointments being at my SILs house.

  • My parents are 12 miles away, I love it. We do a lot with them. H's mom is 500 miles away in nc. We go down a lot, but she still guilt trips him/us.

  • We live in my parent's basement.  There is no access to our apartment from the house though, you have to walk outside down the driveway.  We see them multiple times daily.  My brother, SIL and nephew live under 10 minutes from us.  We see them multiple times a week.

H's parents live about 45 minutes away, with no traffic.  H's sisters still live at home with the ILs.  We see them at least twice a month, sometimes more.  We don't always see H's sisters as much as his parents as they are not always home when we visit.  I wish ILs lived closer.  I enjoy them and when we have a family it would be nice to be able to see them frequently.
  • My parents are about 2 hours away, which isn't too bad, but I wish it was more like an hour. My brother and his girlfriend are living with them while looking for a house to buy, but they'll still be about 2 hours when they buy a place.

H's parents and sister live together about 10-15 minutes from us now. When we move into our house it'll be more like 5. It's only about a mile or two as the crow flies. It's not bad living close by, they don't try to stop by unexpectedly, but we get together frequently and MIL buys us dinner. I'm pretty close to my in-laws.

  • My in-laws are about. 45 mins away and my family is about 2 hrs 15 mins away. Wish my family was closer and the in-laws are the perfect distance !
  • My sister lives 2 miles away, which is fine.  Both of our parents live about 15 minutes away.  That's great for my parents, because I regularly have to go to the farm and help out.  Nice to have it so close.

As for DH's parents, it's fine that they are that close now.  When we first moved into our house having them that close was an issue, but we've established boundries.  It only took a full on scream-fest in front of DH's sister about me having less to do with my own house than his family does.  Once they found out they were causing fights they backed off a bit.
