Who wants to educate me about OPKs?

I don't know too much about them, and I've got quite a few questions.  Or if it's easier, a link to a good website about them is fine too!

 - Do you temp AND take the OPKs?
 - If you're not temping, how do you decided when to start checking?
 - Is it worth doing even if you're not temping?
 - I was perusing the "Pee Buddies" thread, and just to confirm - you're supposed to use them several times a day?
 - What does FMU stand for?
 - How exactly do they tell you if you're ovulating?  I know there's a control line, but does the darkness of the second line matter (i.e. you can't just be ovulating a little bit)?
 - Are they carried by most drug stores / Targets / etc.?  How many do you get for what price on average?

Might come up with more questions, but for now TIA!

     - Do you temp AND take the OPKs? Yes
     - If you're not temping, how do you decided when to start checking? I usually start around CD10
     - Is it worth doing even if you're not temping? Yes
     - I was perusing the "Pee Buddies" thread, and just to confirm - you're supposed to use them several times a day? You don't have to, we just like to pee on things :)
     - What does FMU stand for? First Morning Urine
     - How exactly do they tell you if you're ovulating?  I know there's a control line, but does the darkness of the second line matter (i.e. you can't just be ovulating a little bit)? The second line has to be at least as dark or darker than the control line. Some women (myself included) have a "fade in" while others will just go from stark white to positive.
     - Are they carried by most drug stores / Targets / etc.?  How many do you get for what price on average? Yes, but they can be expensive. Most of the ladies here use the Wondfo brand cheapies. You can buy them on Amazon.

    Good luck!

  •  - Do you temp AND take the OPKs? you can but you don't have to. OPK's will indicate a surge in LH (the hormone that causes o) but that doesn't mean you o. Temping (or a progesterone blood test) is the only way to confirm you actually o.
     - If you're not temping, how do you decided when to start checking? i usually start when i get EWCM but there is a chart that comes with them about when to take them based on you usual cycle length
     - Is it worth doing even if you're not temping? see first question
     - I was perusing the "Pee Buddies" thread, and just to confirm - you're supposed to use them several times a day? once a day is enough for most people but some people have a short surge so test morning and night to catch it. if you have a longer surge you should get 2 days + of positives in a row
     - What does FMU stand for? First Morning Urine
     - How exactly do they tell you if you're ovulating?  I know there's a control line, but does the darkness of the second line matter (i.e. you can't just be ovulating a little bit)? see answer to the first question
     - Are they carried by most drug stores / Targets / etc.?  How many do you get for what price on average? yes but they are expensive. most girls buy from Amazon (wondfo brand) because they are much cheaper.

  •  - Do you temp AND take the OPKs? Yes
     - If you're not temping, how do you decided when to start checking?
     - Is it worth doing even if you're not temping? I think it might if you pay attention to your CM
     - I was perusing the "Pee Buddies" thread, and just to confirm - you're supposed to use them several times a day? You can...I only use them once a day but some ladies choose to use them twice
     - What does FMU stand for? First Morning Urine
     - How exactly do they tell you if you're ovulating?  I know there's a control line, but does the darkness of the second line matter (i.e. you can't just be ovulating a little bit)? The second line has to be as dark or darker than the control. That's the only thing that really matters
     - Are they carried by most drug stores / Targets / etc.?  How many do you get for what price on average? I buy the cheapies on Amazon. You get much more for your money. It's especially helpful if you have to take a lot of OPKs each cycle.

I use the internet cheapies (ICs) with no problem. You want to start testing a few days before your earliest expected O date. Temping helps confirm you've actually O'd, so I prefer to temp, but the OPKs are good for predicting when you really want to get down to business!

I only test with FMU because that's just what's feasible for me.

I usually do this too. I usually get a + two days in a row. I drink too much water to get a reliable result in the afternoon, although sometimes I test in the afternoon anyway just for the fun of it.

  • @flamingo86 and @ecinereb pretty much have it covered :) I just wanted to add that this is my first cycle using OPKs, which is why I was testing 2x (and will continue until I get negatives again) just so I know how long my surge is. I didn't know what to expect and I definitely didn't want to miss it.

OPK's basically detect the LH that's released when you're gearing up to ovulate, and temping helps back up the fact that you likely ovulated with an increase of BBT after O. At least that's my understanding, and like always, if I'm off base here please school me. :-P
  • - Do you temp AND take the OPKs? I always did, but you don't have to.  OPKs help you know when you're about to ovulate (or at least your body is getting ready to) and temping confirms that you did ovulate
     - If you're not temping, how do you decided when to start checking? I used the chart here to determine when to start testing.  Go by your shortest cycle length.
    http://www.ushealthtests.com/wondfo-ovulation-dip-test-package-insert.pdf
     - Is it worth doing even if you're not temping? Sure!  It's relatively low commitment.  Of course, you can't confirm that you did ovulate but it's better than nothing.
     - I was perusing the "Pee Buddies" thread, and just to confirm - you're supposed to use them several times a day? I always tested twice a day.  Once in the morning and once after work.
     - What does FMU stand for? first morning urine
     - How exactly do they tell you if you're ovulating?  I know there's a control line, but does the darkness of the second line matter (i.e. you can't just be ovulating a little bit)? They tell you when your LH is surging, meaning you're likely to ovulate.  It doesn't matter how dark the control line is, what matters is that the test line is as dark or darker than the control.
     - Are they carried by most drug stores / Targets / etc.?  How many do you get for what price on average? There are a lot of different kinds.  The internet cheapies are really popular.  They're called Wondfos and you can buy them on Amazon for less than 50 cents a piece.

@callitcompulsive you've got it! OPKS help because they give you an idea of your FW for BIO. temping only confirms after O and then it's too late.

Thank you all for the info ladies!!  This seems like it would be relatively not stressful, so I think I'll give it a go. :)  At this point since we're just starting (foolish or not) I'm going to assume I do ovulate, but knowing when to BIO would be amazing.

Also re: FMU - that makes so much more sense.  The only thing I could think of was F*ck My Uterus and that didn't make sense within the sentences. :P

  • Do you temp AND take the OPKs? Yes.
     - If you're not temping, how do you decided when to start checking? I would check my cervical mucus 2-3 times a day.
     - Is it worth doing even if you're not temping? Eh. I personally feel that temping, OPKs, and checking CM are the best combination to TTC.
     - I was perusing the "Pee Buddies" thread, and just to confirm - you're supposed to use them several times a day? Pee buddy?
     - What does FMU stand for? first morning urine (used for hpts)
     - How exactly do they tell you if you're ovulating?  I know there's a control line, but does the darkness of the second line matter (i.e. you can't just be ovulating a little bit)? I can't remember exactly what they measure/how they work. The test line must be as dark or darker than the control line.
     - Are they carried by most drug stores / Targets / etc.?  How many do you get for what price on average? Yes. I bought Wondfo opks on Amazon and bought CBE digital opks from Target.
