Talk to me about Infant Carseats/Carriers

Is a 22 lb. weight limit too little for the infant carseat?  The Maxi Cosi that I like http://www.amazon.com/Maxi-Cosi-Mico-Infant-Total-Black/dp/B004GJYU48/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1376942770&sr=8-1&keywords=maxi-cosi+mico has a 22 lb limit.  I see a lot of other ones go up to 30ish lbs.  Truth be told, I don't even know how old kids are when they are 22 lbs or 30 lbs!!!  I don't want to convert them into regular car seats if they are too young!

I guess my question is (a) will the kiddos even want to be in the carrier when they are 22 lbs and (b) will they be too heavy anyway at 22 lbs for me or my mom to carry them?

Thanks!

Re: Talk to me about Infant Carseats/Carriers

  • I can't remember when I switched to a different rear facing seat. I can say though, he was heavy and it was getting hard to lift him up and over the base. I want to say he was about 20-22 lbs or so. He's 27-28 lbs now and he's 16 months, but he's just a big boy and long, not chubby.

    Lesson learned!!

  • We stopped taking the seat IMO stores with us around 20ish pounds I think. Lucy didn't like to sit in it if there was something to see by that point. We probably switched to the convertible seat around 25 pounds but she's still rear facing in that one.

  • We switched to the convertible mug earlier than most because my son hated reclining in the infant seat. He was much happier sitting more upright. He was almost 20 lbs at 7 months. I don't use a stroller very often and the infant carrier was way too heavy and awkward at about 16- 17 lbs which was 4-5 months or so.

Before getting a convertible seat I would do a lot of research to make sure you get one that meets your needs. There is a FB group called car seats for the littles that was really helpful. I am hoping to do extended rear facing so that was a consideration when selecting our seat.

  • we purchased the Graco Snug Ride 30 (30 lb weight limit) which was recommended by Baby Bargains (April 2013 ed).

  • First, most convertible car seats (meaning they can be both rear and front facing) generally will fit newborns, so you can't switch them "too soon."

That said, we got the Graco SnugRide 22 pound version (which I think they discontinued) because Baby Bargains said that if your kid is 22+ lbs, you won't be carrying them in the seat anyway (which is true). I figured the seat would last a while because we were expecting a small baby and DH and I were both 6.5lb babies.

Then our baby was born at almost 9 lbs and is 20lbs at 6 months old. I switched him to a convertible seat in my car a few weeks ago (I couldn't carry him in the baby seat anymore anyway) and DH will need to do the same shortly.

Part of me wishes we got the seat with the higher weight limit because I had hoped our seat would last longer than 6 months, but the smaller weight limit seat weighed less, which decreased the total weight I had to carry, which was helpful.

  • @tdmd09 Even if the seat lasted a little while longer, don't you end up needing to get a convertible anyway since you're supposed to rear face until two?

Yes, but we need two car seats and were hoping to delay the added expense a little longer.

  • LO is still in his infant carrier but we haven't taken him out of the car in the carrier for awhile (the last time was may 4, i remember it. DH did it. but i hadn't done it for a long time prior to that. just too heavy). i want to get my use out of the seat and he doesn't mind the infant seat and still remains within the limits, so i'm keeping him in it. we have the chicco nextfit to switch him in to (i'm shooting for his 1st birthday in a couple of months, but if we find we need to do it sooner i'll feel ok with the time we got out of the infant carrier). for reference, LO was a little over 21 lbs at 9 months. he's a bit of a chunky baby and his weight put him in the 87th percentile.
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • We have the graco snugride 35 and at 2 1/2 DD is still actually under the weight limit (shes about 29 lbs now) but surpassed the height limit a long time ago. So my advice is to see what the height limits are not just the weight limits because those are the ones that usually matter more. There's no way you're going to be carrying a 20+ lb kid around in an infant car seat.

We only kept DD in the infant car seat until she was about 10 mo (she weighed around 17-18 lbs at the time) then moved her to the convertible car seat placed rear facing. You are supposed to keep them rear facing until 2 but that doesn't mean in an infant car seat necessarily. I don't know of any 2 yr olds that are going to still want to sit in one as they typically prefer to sit more upright and as I said will be too tall.

On the flip side, DS was born at 9 lbs and at 5 weeks is about 12 1/2 lbs already so I have a feeling he will be hitting the weight/height limit sooner and in that case I am glad we got one that has the higher weight limit.

  • DS is just over 20lbs at 7 months. We have the chicco nextfit for him that we use in my car, andwe are getting a second convertible seat this weekend. He's pretty tall (29 in) and is about 1\2 an inch away from not being able to use the infant seat anyway. DH still takes him in and out of daycare in the seat, but I prefer to take him out bc his head has a little flat spot and I want him on the back of his head as little as possible.

  • Cora is 12 months old and is 23 pounds. We moved her into a convertible carseat at about 8 months old because she was just too heavy to lug around. I was just laughing yesterday that our infant seat goes to 30 pounds. I would never carry her in it that long.

  • Ours went up to 30lbs. The weight limit isn't as important as the height limit, IMO. Most kids outgrow the height limit before the weight limit. DS was in his convertible around 6 months because he is so tall.

  • Is that just the infant carrier? Once they outgrow that you can still RF in a convertible. I think DS will make it to 2 in his Britax and if he can go longer, great!

  • Ours went to 30lbs but there's no effing way I'm keeping him in the bucket until then. He's 18.5lbs now and I'm switching to a convertible. 22lbs is really heavy so it should be ok.

  • R is 7.5 months. He switched to a convertible (still RFing, I will do that for as long as possible and I'm hoping for 4) around 6 months. He is much happier in the big boy seat. Honestly, around 15-17 lbs your arms will feel like they're gonna fall off if you try carrying LO in the carrier still.

  • DD is 7 months and 17lbs, we just bought her a convertible seat. I can't carry the infant seat for much longer. I actually carried it while I had the box with her new seat in the cart the other day and I barely made it out of the store without breaking my arm, it was so heavy.

  • You will probably want to stop carrying the bucket around long before the baby weighs 22 lbs.  Nugget only weighs about 12 pounds now and I already don't want to carry it.  I think you will be fine with a 22 pound limit.
