I need to get out of retail!

I'm getting so sick of sales. I never thought the job I have would require me to make sales all the time! I don't like doing it. It's the only aspect of my job that I am honestly not great at but I do still make the effort. I'm just sick of my manager breathing down my neck about it.

Today I started applying for receptionist jobs. The additional benefit of this would be that I would finally be full time and thus contribute more to the household (hubby makes a lot more than I do). I am finding right now in my area it's hard to find a full time non sales job that includes benefits (which are a necessity for us).

I haven't let my manager know I'm looking. I don't plan to until I actually get an offer. It could be ages before so,etching works out. I've been looking for ages today and I have only found 2 that I have applied for. At least it's something.

Does anyone have any tips on ways to transition out of retail? What kind of jobs would be best? I love my customers I just hate trying to sell them things! Any key phrases I should be using on my applications or my resume? I would really appreciate the input! If it helps I do have my BA.

Re: I need to get out of retail!

  • I worked in retail for a while- and then moved out of it finding that I really did prefer the office environment

I would look for an entry level office position, office assistant, office admin, customer service position (lends itself well to retail) or something in digital advertising/advertising, marketing assistant, email marketing is also really fun and can lead to a great career path.  Also ad agencies and pr agencies can be fun too if you are creative or enjoy writing- not sure what you did your BA in...

As for your resume- I would just make sure you are tailoring your resume as much as you can to the job you are applying for and hit on the key skills!

  • I just made the retail to admin jump myself.  I just got the offer, but they seemed to really like that I emphasized that throughout my work history, although I've had a lot of different titles in several fields - the skill set was the same, customer service.  Just play up your skills that would be needed in the positions you're applying for and have supporting examples of how you've used those skills in your current job.

    Good luck!

  • Do you do commissioned sales? I've never known regular retail to come with such pressure. My experience in retail lead me to a job in major capitals sales. Wanna talk about pressure? The product I currently deal with starts at $250,000 each!

The biggest aspect my employer was interested in was the fact that my retail job involved a lot of product knowledge and customer relationships. You says you "love" your customers... That could be very helpful in a customer service position that involves repeat customers. Maybe something involving specific accounts, where you could say "oh hello, mr. Jones, what can I help you with today?" Maybe some sort of insurance, or banking... I'm tired so I'm sorry if this doesn't make any sense.

  • Thanks ladies! It all makes sense. I'm actually in banking now. While I occasionally do have products I know a customer would benefit from, my sales levels are the lowest of all. I feel like the way my manager wants me to get sales isn't really a way that benefits a customer (I.e production is most important). All of my jobs have been customer service related so I am hoping that helps!

I worked in retail throughout high school and into my first two years of college.  By my junior year of college, I was SO tired of dealing with sales, rude customers, and low pay.  I started applying everywhere other than retail stores and ended up landing a job at the local hospital.  I work as a registrar now, in the ER, maternity, and outpatient lab.  It's a completely different work, but it's easy to do and the healthcare field pays really well.  I'm also per diem, so they work around my school schedule and I have no upper limit to the amount of hours I can work - if they're available, I can take them.  They also have full time and part time positions and offer benefits.  Definitely check out the local hospital - most applications are online.

  • I am in the same boat. I hate retail. I work in women's apparel. Whenever it is busy, I have people tell me, "It's a full time job, just folding everyone else's clothes, huh?" or, "I do NOT envy your job." Wow, thanks. In reference to finding a new job though, I keep hearing the same thing that it is about who you know. I know when you already have a job it is difficult to make time to do things outside of work, but get yourself out there and introduce yourself to everyone. Join a club or volunteer for an organization. Even if you don't get a job right away, you will be a little happier learning something new and getting to know people outside of the realm of retail.
  • I actually got a job at a medical clinic. I work the front desk. I've been there nearly a month. I love it a lot more and the pay is worlds better. :)
