fitness post!

I'm in a rut.  HELP!  I have lost motivation and enjoyment.  And I'm registered for a 5k at the end of this month, so I need to step it up again!

Last week, I ran 3 days, but they weren't that great.  I made it 2.5 the first day, the second time I only did 2.2 and the last run I did 2.  Also, I managed to drop the treadmill on my foot mid-week, so I was mad at myself for that (and it hurt like crazy!!!)

What do you do when you lose your motivation?  I really did used to like to get out & run, now I just dread it.  it feels like I'm out there forever & I realize it's only been a mile or so.  I'm not sure if I need to just change it up & do something else in between runs, or....?

I didn't have much motivation this week so I cut myself some slack. Although I had a 5k race yesterday and wished I hadn't slacked! But this week I will be better. I just feel better when I work out more so I end up wishing I would have worked out if I didn't. But sometimes I think taking a week off helps me remember that!

I also hate if my clothes start feeling snug or anything...that definitely is motivation!

  • My fitness post for the week is that I came in 3rd in my age group in my 5K race yesterday (out of 29). My time was 28:04!

Like I said I slacked last week and hadn't run. I felt like I struggled a little and took a few quick walk breaks. I'm happy with my time but I could have gotten it under 28 mins. It was race with dogs so I had my pup with me and she had a few stops too.

I really want to get another 5K in on my own and see if I can get it under 28 mins.

Otherwise I really didn't do much last week. I have had a constant headache and dh has been working late so I couldn't get out much. Hoping this week will be better!

  • We did an 8 mile bike ride on Saturday--which I actually look forward too.  I wish I could get DH to do it with me more often.   I feel like biking is a good workout, but I don't dread it like I do running. The ride takes us about 70 minutes, minus a snack break in the middle.  And there is no way I could run that long!

And this is really vain, but new workout gear, even if it's just fun new socks always motivates me just a bit more.

  • I don't know why, but I always stick to workouts more when they are scheduled.  Not scheduled by me, but like I have to go attend something at a gym, etc.  I realize this, and I've not wanted to join a gym, so I looked for Zumba classes in my area and signed myself up.  My first one is tonight.  I used to love Zumba before I got pregnant with Parker.  I'm hoping it goes well again.  I think just changing it up so you're not always doing the same thing will make it a little more interesting.  Maybe run a different route?  Maybe new music?  Maybe try a workout video or something instead of running one day?  Either way, just stick to it...the worst is letting it go and then trying to get back into it.  Believe me, I'm the poster child.
  • Some things I do to motivate myself: I try not to be too hard on myself.  I find if I beat myself up over taking a few days off or having a half a$$ed run, then I am less motivated to get back into my groove again.  So I allow myself off days without making myself feel guilty.  I also try to switch it up - a new running route, doing a different class at the gym, walking instead of running, going with a friend, etc.  Also, like Amy said, new gear helps too - like new socks or even new music on my playlist.  I got out of my last rut by switching to a different running app on my phone.  Just a small change can really help get me excited about working out again.
  • I had a good week last week.  I did my 3 days of running (3.5, 3.5, 5) and kept my pace under 11 minutes for each run.  (I will never be fast, and I am okay with that.)  I also took a Pilates class and did some strength training on my own at home one day.

This week my runs bump up to 4, 4, and 6, so I am a little nervous about that.
  • Like the others said, I get motivated by new work out clothes or a new song.  (Since I go to class, sometimes there's a song that I just love, so going there and shaking it to that song makes me feel happy).   Also, it helps if someone is going with  me, so maybe make a running date with a friend.

I didn't do jack last week.  It's my busiest time at work so when I got home I was fried.  This week is the same.  I'm hoping to get back on the bandwagon in September.   Womp, womp.
  • Here's my motivation...I was just looking at the vacation pics and this is the first year since my daughter was born (almost 3 years ago)  that my stomach actually looked flat under my bathing suit. I remember being so devastated looking at the beach picture 2 years ago, when dd was 9 months old, because my stomach looked like a was a few months pregnant.   I finally found something that seems to be working.  It's so motivating to see a change.

  • Try shaking up your run.  Run .25 mile, then do a minute of mountain climbers.  Then another 1/4, a 10 pushups.  Try to sprint for 30 seconds then walk for 60.  Anything to change things up.  And being registered for a 5k is definitely good motivation!

  • What motivates me is reading while working out. I use an elliptical so I put my kindle on the little ledge while I read. Since I ALWAYS want to know what's going to happen next in a book it keeps me going :) maybe try a book on tape from iTunes on your iPod? Or I think the library even has mp3 versions in case your note in a treadmill/elliptical.

I have been watching TV while running on the treadmill (I still prefer to run outside, but sometimes if i'm running later or in yucky weather, I drag that thing out)....I thought the TV would be enough but I still find myself staring at the time on the treadmill!  Maybe I do just need to change it up a bit.  Or, once things settle back down after school starts and stuff, I can get more back into the swing of things.  thanks for the words of encouragement!
