Visiting the state we hope to move to WWYD

Hi! H and I plan on moving to VA we are hoping within the next 2 yrs. My companys headquarters is there so I am hoping to get a job there. If not, any complany would work in the begining. H is in the medical field so he should be able to find any kind of job. We've never been to VA but are staying with some friends there in about 2 months. We hope to be driving down to stay for 4 days or so. It will be a move from HCOL to M-LCOL. What are the types of things that we should be doing/looking at when we go there? Should we meet with a realtor at all to get info about areas/the market? When I look at homes for sale, I do see a lot of them are in subdivisions-not sure what thats about. We wouldnt plan on buying a house at first but renting until we get a feel for all of the areas. If we do love it there when we go in Oct, we may visit a few more times to get better ideas. Any tips would be great for what to do when visiting! TIA!

  • If you aren't going to be buying a house for a while, I wouldn't be necessarily looking for them while I was down there.  Since you are only going to be there for a few days, I would be looking at rentals.  The house can come later.  Check online for apartments then look at them when you get there.  I would also take a drive to the office during rush hour to see what traffic patterns are.  Just drive around in general to find out where the grocery store is, gas stations, etc.

Before you make such a move, I would make sure about the job market there.  Personally, I wouldn't make such a move unless I knew both DH and I had jobs lined up.

Oh and while you are there talk to everyone and ask them what they love and hate about the area.  Tell them that you are thinking of moving there and see what they say.

    Good luck!!

  • I'd definitely check out the neighborhood, and there probably are a lot of subdivisions. Or check out the local Target, grocery store to see what kind of feel you get for the area. Also keep an eye (ear) out for noise if you might be near a loud street.
  • In general, I would recommend renting (even if for the short term) before you buy so you can get to know the area.  What you like in a weekend visit will be very different from your priorities in a house when you move for good.  Also, you don't want to be rushed into buying a house you are maybe "meh" about just because you're moving.  Find a place you can rent for maybe 6-9 months - it will give you plenty of time to get to know the area and find a house.

Similarly, having just moved, I can say that getting a job can be tough before you move - sometimes just having that new address makes a difference.  I barely got any calls (although one did pan out, luckily, so I did end up having a new job lined up when we moved) just because of my address.
