this kid drives me nuts!!!

There is an intern at my office who DRIVES. ME. NUTS.  He's so awkward and he makes awkward jokes and he stares in my office any time he walks by. Like neck-craning kind of staring.  I guess I should say he makes me uncomfortable and kind of creeps me out more than anything.

I have a group of coworkers that I eat lunch with nearly every day, and when he first started he asked if he could join our group to eat. No biggie, we didn't mind.  I've been trying to work out more and eat healthier, so I tend to bring really healthy lunches.. I've been trying new recipes, trying organic stuff ive never had before, etc. He makes jokes about the food I eat and comments incessantly how unhealthy/healthy his food is. He just turned 21, so all he can really talk about is drinking and bars and going out. I'm only 25... but I've never been a big fan of 'going out' in that sense.  I guess it just drives me nuts because I feel like he doesn't quite understand how to be interested in anyone else.  He somehow always brings the convo back to himself.  I've taken to eating lunch in my office to avoid him most days.  I am really thankful that his internship ends next week!!

I started in this company as an intern myself, so I try not to judge because I know how hard it is to not only be brand new and but also trying to start out on a career path/gain experience. I just feel like he is so unprofessional and doesn't try hard to be respectful to others in the company.  He must be a fantastic interviewer because he's worked for some pretty big companies in the past as an intern, but his demeanor around the office makes me seriously wonder how he got hired in the first place.

This seems like an obvious question, but: Has anyone else had a coworker (temporary or otherwise) who just bothers you? In a non-work related way?

Re: this kid drives me nuts!!!

  • Ugh! I feel ya! We have a guy in our office who is constantly inserting himself into others conversations, making gross noises, going on about his "crazy" wife, complaining about being broke (wife "can't" work and they have 2 kids) and touting his faith. I avoid him as much as possible and feel horrible for those who can't. I believe his wife is crazy, why else would anyone marry this douche! He is also just creepy. Can't really put it into words other than he tries too hard and is just creepy! Unfortunately, he is now a permanent employee. Be glad there's and end in sight!
  • Maybe she has a similar personality to him?? i can't imagine any other reason someone could handle that!! What kind of 'gross' noises does he make? I feel like i'm opening a can of worms just asking, but my curiosity has gotten the better of me..

I am VERY glad there is an end in sight. I actually found out today his last day is TOMORROW and not next week :) Happy dance!!

I always kind of wonder how some people just don't have a filter. Sometimes I say some pretty horrible/random stuff that I don't think about beforehand, but definitely NOT in the workplace. If I'm going to be incredibly rude/awkward/weird, I'll do it off-hours lol
  • He's just a drama queen. He is constantly hacking up stuff, burping, coming out of the bathroom and saying things like "Woah, shouldn't have eaten xyz last night". Ick, Ick, Ick!!!! I don't know how old he is (I NEVER ask him questions for fear of getting stuck in a conversation) guessing early 20's. I'm thinking, what is he going to sound like when he's old?! So happy for you that there's an end in sight!
  • Ugh, anything bathroom related should remain PRIVATE.  That's so gross.  Does he work in close proximity to you??
  • Funny little aside to this story, when he started I thought he was totally creepy. Everyone else thought he was soooo wonderful. Now they're all like "How did no one see this?". I just laugh to myself. My boss, 1 other coworker and I all thought he was a total creep. My boss tried to broach the subject with the powers that be and they totally shut her down. Bet they are wishing they would have listened!
  • I can hear his inane commentary thorough our wall. At least I have a wall!
  • Oh jeez!!! haha so funny how some of you totally saw it from the get-go.  Maybe he was a lot like the intern here and made an amazing first impression to the people who mattered at the time?!?!

Yes! A wall is great!! I'm pretty happy that the intern works in a different location.. same building, but he got moved upstairs as they hired a new person who took the spot he was sitting in. So now I only see him when he wanders past my area or at lunch.
