As you all know, a few weeks ago I had to withdraw from school. I had gotten a letter stating that they couldn't promise I would get an externship due to my medical history. I was quite distraught over it, and it seemed kind of unfair really. So, I have been trying to figure out what to do with my life. I've been paniced over it since my full time job ends tomorrow (I'm actually happy about this), but I didn't know where I was going. I had been looking into different programs and seeing if there was something that fit me.
The other night I met with an admissions person at a local technical school regarding some of their programs. I mentioned to her my situation...that I really wanted dental assisting and the reason why I had to drop out. Anyway, the next day the lady calls me up and tells me that my issue would actually NOT be a problem with dental assisting. She had asked around and spoke with the school director and lead dental instructor. I made an appt to see her yesterday. But, in the mean time, I sent her an email with my concerns and requested that someone from the program call me. I had a great conversation with the lead instructor and she assured me that I would not have a problem getting an externship or a job (this was a major concern, obviously). She had explained to me that I learn all the procedures to protect myself (infection control), but I have to treat every patient like they have a disease (lots of people never tell you). What she said made a lot of sense, and she also said that in the 20 years she's been in dental, she has never had to disclose her medical history. My hygentist had said the same thing.
Anyway, to make a long story short....I'm going back to school for what I originally intended! (I just hope it doesn't blow up in my face again). I can't wait.
