I know it's not Friday, but can we do a FFQ?

My ankles have been super swollen for weeks now, and over the past week they've become painful. It hurts to rotate my ankles and to try and massage them. Is this a normal pregnancy thing because of all the extra weight?

  • I would say probably yes. All the ligaments in your body are loose including in your feet and ankles. Then with the added weight and swelling it could exasperate the problem.

  • I told my doctor about my swollen feet. Min3 only get swollen towards the end of the day so she wasn't that concerned but she did say to cut down on salt. So I recommend cutting down on salt intake.

I also agree with wiggy. Hopefully you feel better soon. Swollen feet suck!!
  • Mine were swollen toward the end of the day w/ DS and all my Dr told me was to put my feet elevated for a bit. Otherwise she didn't seem concerned. You're almost there. :o)

  • That's what I was thinking, because my BP has been mostly normal so I think it's just little miss getting heavy. ;)

My BP has always been normal but that's what she said :-/ Lol. You are almost at the finish line though so it may just be LO getting heavy.
  • My ankles and feet were very swollen at the end, especially because it was hot. Drinking lots of water and keeping them elevated helped some, but the best thing was being in a swimming pool.  I sat my fat ass in the pool all day the last 2 weekends before I gave birth.

  • Mine were crazy swollen, but not painful. Though everything hurt the last couple weeks.

I upped my salt intake (sea salt) and water intake and it helped only a little.

  • Mine were very swollen.  I was so happy when my feet looked normal again!  I just continued drinking lots of water, and would elevate my feet at night.

  • Mine were very swollen as well and would hurt (almost felt like they were bruised). Doc just said yep its normal. I also had very swollen hands that ached and felt arthritic. Doc called it pregnancy carpal tunnel and had me wearing wrist braces to help. It went away after I delivered.

  • Mine got swollen at the end, but not painful unless I was on my feet too much.  Do what PPs have said and drink lots of water and elevate them if you can.  Even at work, just keeping them up off the floor on a little box or stool (if you're at a desK) can help.  Do mention it to your doctor just to make sure it's normal, but it sounds like a normal thing since you're nearing the end.

  • I've been getting numbness in my hands recently. I've talked to my Dr about it, and she basically said it happens, and unless I get numbness in my legs/feet then it's nothing to worry about.

If you had numbness in your hands, how soon after given birth did this go away?

  • My SIL had this problem. She called it pregnancy carpal tunnel but I don't know if the doctor ever told her that. It took a couple weeks after birth to go away because I remember having trouble changing diapers and burping her. She was told it would go away shortly after birth.

She may have stretched the truth about the numbness lasting a couple weeks though because they fight over who has to do anything with the baby so she may have been trying to get out of changing diapers and burping her. They still (5 mo later) come up with excuses to get out of taking care of her.

Yep I had carpal tunnel and it went away after delivery. Maybe not immediately, but very soon after. The first weeks are kind of a blur.

  • Madeline - It's the same with me. She has her active times where I get all the kick counts I need within about 30 seconds, then she'll be sleepy for a few hours. I'm sure it's normal.

  • Same here on kick counts. I don't actually understand the concept of 10 per hour because he has a sleep schedule already. I feel him move regularly. I can't imagine stopping and sitting still for random hours when he's resting. It would stress me out too much... How would you function?

I think I've just figured 10 per hour is the goal if he were to slow down and worry me. At that point I would stop and count.
