WIJFR: Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah (sp)

This book killed me. I was sobbing so hard at the end of the "fairy tale", when Vera had to send her daughter on the train out of Leningrad while she went back to her son who was dying. Wow. Just wow. Definitely made me hug and squeeze DS as hard as I could.

I agree with a couple of you who said the beginning was slow but the second half of the book more than made up for it. It almost seemed like this was two separate books, in a way. I didn't dislike the first half, but the second half was so powerful.

It reminded me a lot of The Bronze Horseman, which made me want to read that series again. If I had some more time, I'd really like to do some research of my own on the siege of Leningrad. It's so hard to even comprehend the horror that they must have gone through.

  • It's been a while since I read this but I really enjoyed it. I've never read The Bronze Horseman. I should check it out.

  • I won an ARC of this on GR, and I was SO UPSET when I didn't immediately love it. But I did end up really enjoying it once I got halfway through.

  • I really liked the second half of this book. I cried so much at the end especially when Vera found out her husband and daughter survived.

  • I loved this book!  As a result of reading it, I read TBH.  If you are looking for a nonfiction on the siege, try Leningrad: State of Siege by Michael Jones.  It is pretty interesting to read the facts.

Ditto!!  LOVED this book.  Started of a little slow but was well worth it.

  • I loved this book! I still haven't read TBH but I want to. I agree with others that the first half was slow and the second half was amazing. I recommend this all the time.
