Blog post on Sweet Valley & girls today

I ran into this on Rants from Mommyland and found it interesting. I know we have NBCers that were into girl empowerment and the Cinderella Ate My Daughter non-fiction. This relates, no?

  • I loved these books but don't remember them being so hateful. Except for Lila, she was a bitch.

  • I read a number of these books.  I don't remember them being so mean-spirited.  But, they didn't make me hate myself or think I was fat.  I just remember not being a fan of Jessica.
  • I don't remember Jessica being such a bitch. However, I don't think the books helped or hurt my self-esteem.

  • Jessica was pretty awful.

  • I remember Jessica being awful, and over obsessed with boys and her looks, but I don't think it had a negative impact on me. I read murder mysteries in high school too, and those didn't make me want to kill people. I can kinda see though how someone today would look negatively on Jessica's attitude and comments.

  • Andbutalso....

Let's be honest for a second. While none of us like the horrible things Jessica used to say about other people, isn't it kind of the reality of what mean girls say in high school?

  • I remember thinking Jessica was a horrible person and Elizabeth generally told Jessica to shut it.
I laughed when the article writer called out the boy who told her she had thunder thighs. Go her!

I agree but her daughter isn't in high school yet. I gathered that she was just in really early middle school, maybe even just 5th grade. She said that she knows eventually her daughter will have self image issues and everything, but she just wants to hold off on that as long as possible. She doesn't want her to have a predetermined idea of "perfect" and I kind of get that.

I remember SVH books saying that the twins were a perfect size six, so I really did think for a long time that that was the "right" size.

I think sheltering kids from things that they are already experiencing is pretty silly, but helping them stay little and innocent when they are just young? I can get behind that.

I TOTALLY agree with that. I missed the part about her daughter's age.
