I don't know if its the same in the US, but my SIL was telling me it took 12 weeks from the time they ordered a crib for it to come in.
This would mean we would be aiming to order a crib around October 1st.
What do I need to know about choosing one?

Re: Talk to me about cribs
I know things are always different for you because you live outside the US, but all cribs sold in USA (no matter how cheap or how expensive) must abide by certain safety rules effective since 2011.
When I visited furniture stores, many told me 8-12 weeks for delivery. When I looked at BRU and BBB, they all ship within 2 days. Amazon has a ton too, and many of those are immediate shipping as well. I am not sure about PB and RH though.
I didn't think to check Amazon Canada. I will do that! Because BRU didn't have anything, I was looking at furniture stores where the wait time is longer.

We got the Graco Lauren crib from BRU, and we just picked it up in store and brought it home the same day.
Obviously it all depends on what you're looking for and where you buy it, but furniture stores would generally have a lead time with anything they sell, so Amazon, Target, BRU, would have them more available.

A lot of the options boil down to personal preference. Finding a crib with a harder wood might help it to look nice longer, but they might cost more and you still might need a teething guard for the top rail.
Some people want to stay away from particle board to reduce emissions. If that is the case you will want to make sure to look for one that has a metal spring bottom.
After retrieving pacifiers from behind the crib a million times I can now see the benefit of cribs with a solid back. This problem could be solved with bumpers but I don't use them (even the breathable kind).
If you have the space I would go for a full size crib over a mini crib which might be outgrown before you are ready.
You can get pretty inexpensive cribs from Target and Ikea that meet the safety requirements.
The baby bargains book was also helpful to me, but I don't know if it would be as useful if shopping for cribs outside the US.
To make you feel my love.
And to be completely honest with you I bought the crib maybe a month ago :-/ I was slacking.
Don't try to bring it home in your small car. You will feel silly when they have to take it back because you'll need to borrow your neighbors' van. Not that this happened to us or anything.
5 cats. 1 baby.
We got one with a changing table attached. I am SO glad we went with this one versus a stand alone crib. We use the changing table part for every single diaper change and it has lots of storage space for diapers etc. (there are two shelves on the side that you can't see)

If I start now, I will have no issue with timing to special order if I have too.
