Talk to me about cribs

I don't know if its the same in the US, but my SIL was telling me it took 12 weeks from the time they ordered a crib for it to come in.
This would mean we would be aiming to order a crib around October 1st.

What do I need to know about choosing one?

Re: Talk to me about cribs

  • I know things are always different for you because you live outside the US, but all cribs sold in USA (no matter how cheap or how expensive) must abide by certain safety rules effective since 2011.

When I visited furniture stores, many told me 8-12 weeks for delivery.  When I looked at BRU and BBB, they all ship within 2 days.  Amazon has a ton too, and many of those are immediate shipping as well.  I am not sure about PB and RH though.

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013

  • It's the same thing here so I have to buy a Canadian crib and our selection is so much less at BRU.

I didn't think to check Amazon Canada. I will do that! Because BRU didn't have anything, I was looking at furniture stores where the wait time is longer.

We got the Graco Lauren crib from BRU, and we just picked it up in store and brought it home the same day.

Obviously it all depends on what you're looking for and where you buy it, but furniture stores would generally have a lead time with anything they sell, so Amazon, Target, BRU, would have them more available.

  • I had my crib by the time I started my second trimester, so I don't see anything wrong with ordering one now if you find one you like.

  • I ordered my crib from BRU and did in store pick up which saved me shipping costs. However the box was very big and barely fit into a Ford Explorer. It arrived in 2 or 3 weeks.

A lot of the options boil down to personal preference. Finding a crib with a harder wood might help it to look nice longer, but they might cost more and you still might need a teething guard for the top rail.

Some people want to stay away from particle board to reduce emissions. If that is the case you will want to make sure to look for one that has a metal spring bottom.

After retrieving pacifiers from behind the crib a million times I can now see the benefit of cribs with a solid back. This problem could be solved with bumpers but I don't use them (even the breathable kind).

If you have the space I would go for a full size crib over a mini crib which might be outgrown before you are ready.

You can get pretty inexpensive cribs from Target and Ikea that meet the safety requirements.

The baby bargains book was also helpful to me, but I don't know if it would be as useful if shopping for cribs outside the US.

  • I went to sears, picked one I liked, paid for it and brought it home that same day.

And to be completely honest with you I bought the crib maybe a month ago :-/ I was slacking.
  • We ordered from BRU and it was in within a week or so. I think the timeline depends on where you go, what's in stock, etc. I did research first, narrowed it down to a couple of brands and then we looked in store. We were able to get 20% off the crib and matching dresser/changing table, and paid a little under $700 for both.

Don't try to bring it home in your small car. You will feel silly when they have to take it back because you'll need to borrow your neighbors' van. Not that this happened to us or anything.

  • after comparing prices all over the place and waivering on which model to buy, i went with the graco lauren and bought from walmart. they delivered it for $2, though i could have picked it up for free (it was worth the $2 for me to have it delivered). it showed up in about a week. i had also wondered if it would take 12 weeks, but it didn't. it wasn't a special order or special item or anything like that.

  • We got one with a changing table attached.  I am SO glad we went with this one versus a stand alone crib.  We use the changing table part for every single diaper change and it has lots of storage space for diapers etc. (there are two shelves on the side that you can't see)image

  • L's crib was a gift from MIL. We told her which one we wanted and she ordered it off Amazon. It was delivered within 10 days to our apartment.  If you find one you like, I don't see any harm in ordering it. I will say, once the crib was set up in her room, things felt a lot more real to me.
  • I'm with @Shazzie116.  It felt more real once it was set up.

  • Thanks ladies! I'll keep looking around. :)

If I start now, I will have no issue with timing to special order if I have too.

  • We bought ours from a local baby store and they told us to prep for a 3 month wait. It'll be 8 weeks next week. Now that we have all the painting done in the nursery I'm super anxious for it to get here.

  • I love the idea of the attached changing table. Our PNP has a changing attachment and we use it for every changing. Love it.

  • I ordered the Graco Lauren from Walmart and went and picked it up. The box fit in the back of a Subaru Impreza 5-door with the back seats down. It took about one week to arrive.
