Good fall books?

I'm in the mood for fall as it's still about 95 degrees here lately. Any good fall book rec's??

Re: Good fall books?

  • What defines a "fall" book?  I know for me I like certain books during certain seasons. I like fluff a lot more in the Summer but Fall and Winter are times usually for heavy hitters that may affect me more.

Nicolle's book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)

  • That also. I don't really have qualifications for a fall book. The setting in the fall, something a little deeper, makes you think but maybe not exactly "stressful". I may not be making any sense at all!

  • I read an Outlander book every fall.  I'm not sure why, but they just feel like fall books to me.  Maybe because I started the series in the fall, but I only read one a year, and it's always in the fall.

Have you read Atonement by Ian McEwan?  That might fit your "makes you think but isn't stressful" category.  Or anything by Ian McEwan, really.

How about Shutter Island, by Dennis Lehane?  It's sort of creepy, which feels makes it feel fall-ish.
  • Thanks for the rec's! I am a few hundred pages deep into Echo right now. I took a break for some reason to read Harry Potter, but I think I'll take a break from that after book 4 here. I need breaks! I may pick up Echo again soon though =)

  • I don't remember if this book has a fall setting or if I just associate it with fall because I read it in fall, but the first book that comes to mind for me is The Kindness of Strangers by Katrina Kittle (I think).

  • Shutter Island is a good rec!  I also like mysteries in the fall.  Have you read Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin?

  • nope! I'll look into those. Thank you!

  • I like to read creepy books in the fall.. Stephen King, ghost stories, etc.

And ditto @susiebw. I don't know why, but the Outlander books are fall-ish to me too.

  • Maybe it's all of the outdoorsy stuff in Outlander? =) Man I love that series!

  • I also love a good creepy read in the fall. I like to reread short stories by Edgar Allan Poe. Ooooh and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving.

I'm in this camp.  Anne Rice, SK, anything about witches...maybe A Discovery of Witches if you haven't already.  Spook is a good book about the quest for knowledge about what happens after we die (non-fiction).

  • I ditto pp about scary/spooky books, or usually books with witches or ghosts.
