Love hate relationship

There are things I love about my job. It's in my field, I meet new people all the time, the work environment is good and what I do is rewarding. And what wears me down. I'm hired part time but work full time with no overtime pay, the equipment I work with is not in good condition, my availability was and still isn't honerd.

The biggest thing as of this moment is one cow irking in particular has been nasty toward me( taken out their frustration toward me verbally). Not only that they are hired full time but do not work full time hours. Has not shown up at all for work leaving me to do twice as much work. Or has shown up hours late and complained to me about having to come in. There's more but this is a big part of it.

We also sell products to clients and I make a sale(s) 98% of the days I work. And I sell a lot. I've been recognized by my manager for having good sales. I have filled in on my days off but no one has been able to help me out when I really need it (I have IBS).

I've requested meetings with my manager to talk or get help so I can improve myself but it has never happened. It's frustrating because this coworker has pulled the wool over the managers eyes. They aren't doing what they are supposed to.

Thoughts. Suggestions. Questions. I'm at a loss.

Re: Love hate relationship

  • Honestly, I don't think you should waste your time in a place that makes you unhappy and hinders your growth in the company.  It may be in your field, but it's not worth your time, effort, or stress if it is taking you nowhere.  There will always be crappy coworkers, but they should be held responsible for their actions... and it doesn't seem like your manager cares much about responsibility.  He/She may recognize your sales, but if they're not willing to work with you and help you grow as an employee, you won't ever get out of the situation/role you're stuck in.

I used to have a crappy job that I hated and management who favored the useless... I had a lot of bitterness in my work and it took a lot for me to finally realize it was such an unhealthy environment for me and was hurting my work ethic as a result.  I didn't want to do ANYTHING because i wouldn't be recognized for it and all of my lazy coworkers would be rewarded instead.  It took me awhile to get into it, and I started from the bottom and bounced around the company before I landed where I wanted to be... but now, I'm in a job i LOVE with management who truly keep an eye out for my growth and future in the company.  They actually think about what my strengths are and assign projects/roles that show off those strengths and they are constantly looking for ways to help me further my career with them.   I honestly didn't think those types of bosses existed until now.

It might take some searching, but you're better off looking for a job that will build you up instead of breaking you down.  Life is too short to hate where you are 8 hours a day!!
  • I'm at work about 10 hours a day several times a month. Normally there 8. Queenifhearts, you are correct. Thank you. I will start looking elsewhere. I'm not going to quit without anyplace to go. Unless sercumstances change drastically.

This certainly sounds like a frustrating situation. It sounds like you're on the right track by looking for something better and at least this position is in your field so you can build off this experience. It sounds like you are a dedicated employee, and that is why you put in full-time hours rather than the part-time ones you are paid for, but be careful about this. If they can get away with exploiting you like this they will. In this case, I might actually put my foot down on that issue.

  • Thanks Saphire. I will most certainly be more aware from now on.

My manager finally came to my location and sat down with me and the only other coworker who works hard. After the meeting my hours have been cut (by cutting the number of days i work) because she wants to make me happy (and keep me in the company). There was talk about making me a lead photographer down the road (once things get better at my location). I was surprised and it was nice knowing people would want me in that position. I do some of what that roll requires now but didn't think people thought like that about me.

I'm not sure how long I'll be with this company but if things improve quickly my stay will be longer. Or if my job search on the side proves fruitful it will be sort.

I feel bad you are having to go through that. It always stinks when your employer puts you in that position. Sounds like you are great at what you do though. :)

Thanks. I like to think I am but I always want to keep improving and learning. I have never been in a situation like this before. It' not easy for me.
  • i'm glad to hear things are looking up, at least!!!
  • For the time being things are looking up. I hope it stays that way. It would be awful if things don't continually improve or get worse.
