Sorry for being a PW today! So I posted a little bit ago about paying off DH's collection accounts. We looked at FreeCreditReport.com today and it seems one of the collections items that was on there a month or two ago has disappeared. Does that mean it was so old it fell off his credit? I'd hate to pay everything off but miss one....
Re: Where did it go?
If you didn't see it on his credit report, it could have been that the report was pulled from a bureau that the collection(s) weren't reported to. That said, avoid FreeCreditReport.com. They sucker people in with their "free trial," banking on people who forget to cancel. Please use AnnualCreditReport.com, and make sure you pull reports from all 3 bureaus--Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. You will see ads during the process, but you can navigate past them and will not have to provide any payment information.
The last one that I sat through was all about credit score not realizing that if your credit history is messed up your credit score will be lower.
