Fitness Post!

How did everyone do this week?

Emmy - How did Brian like Tough Mudder?  Some of my neighbors did it, and they texted me that it was "awesome", but I haven't talked to them yet to hear all of the details.  Glad to hear that Brian at least survived!

Re: Fitness Post!

  • I ran 3 days, did Pilates 1 day, walked 1 day, and took 2 rest days.

My short runs were good, so I was feeling confident about running 6 miles.  Then, I went out for my long run on Saturday, had a horrible headache and a 1/2 mile in I started feeling really nauseous, so I just ended up walking 2 miles.  I tried again on Sunday morning and was able to do 6 miles, my longest distance ever.  I still wasn't feeling the greatest and I took a lot of walking breaks, so I finished at a 12 minute pace, but I feel good about doing it.

Does anyone have any recommendations for what to eat/drink that will give you energy before running?  Sometimes my legs feel like dead weight, and I feel like I need to do a better job of "fueling" my body.
  • He actually loved the tough mudder (which is mind-boggling to me after he told me about it, but to each their own!)

After hitting my wall last week, I got back out there.  I went out Friday night (went a different route, which helped to change it up a bit) and did 2.75.  On Sunday morning, I did the full 5K in preparation for the steelers race this week, and it took me 32 minutes, I had to walk about 2 minutes in the middle, so about 10 min/mile pace, which I was happy with.  I hope to get out tomorrow, then do the 5K on Saturday!

  • Not a great week for me. I went to Zumba twice and did it on my own at home once. Only did 1 run this past week.

Its ragweed season and I'm fairly allergic although the last few years I haven't been bad. But this year is getting to me. So I decided to take it easy. Hoping to get in more runs this week

  • Meghan--congrats on getting those long runs in!

I'm also interested in what everyone eats before runs; I feel like I need to eat something or I'd die, but I've also made the mistake of going out too soon after an actual meal & that was not good either, ICK!

  • I usually eat a banana, or about a cup of dry cereal before a morning run.  Something that is more quickly digestible than say something with more whole grains or protein. Then when I get back I have my protein and perhaps more carbs. I also drink at least a half bottle of water. (about 16 oz) in the summer. When it is cold out I tend to be able to handle a little more food in my belly and less water when I run.

I'm the same way. I have gone in the evening before dinner and my stomach was empty and that was bad! But I've also gone right after dinner and that was no fun either!

Now if I go before dinner I usually have some triscuits and cheese and do ok. If going after dinner it's usually far enough after and I try not to eat a ton at dinner.

I don't often run in the morning but for races I did banana and whole wheat toast with PB and that was perfect.

  • I'm running the Steeler 5K this coming Saturday too!  I did get out to run twice last week and did the 5K distance both times.  I don't usually contribute to these fitness posts because I feel like such a slacker.  I blame Elsey for never ever letting me sleep and my husband for being on a wacky schedule that means he works weekends and I'm home alone with the kids.  I would love to be able to get up on a Saturday or Sunday morning and go out for a run like I used to.  Of course, if my husband was home on a Saturday or Sunday morning I would probably say forget it and just sleep instead!

  • I have been a big fat fail the last few weeks and need to get back into a routine. DH is away until thursday so maybe I can talk DD to play on Ipad while I get on the treadmill.
  • Thanks for the fitness posts!  It makes me accountable!  Last week I did T25 for 5 days. I didn't have time to double up on Friday because the baby was up by 7:30 so I just got 1 25 minute workout it.  It's amazing in just 2 weeks of full on T25 how better my pants fit  (2 inches off my waist alone and another 1 from the hips and thighs).  I still hate pushups with a passion but I feel myself getting stronger!  But damn, I definitely work for it.

  • I am resurrecting this post because I went back to my Body Blast class last night for the first time in 2 months.  Really besides some at home stuff and a zumba class once or twice, it's the first real exercise I've done in that time frame.  I thought I was going to die.  Then I felt like I was going to puke or pass out.  It was hard.   I didn't realize how out of shape I had gotten in such a short time frame.   I hope I learned a valuable lesson!   I'm only a little bit sore today, but I fear tomorrow.
