NBR: Anybody infuse their own vodka?

I want to play around with infusing a few different vodkas to give as a gift at a Stock the Bar shower. Anybody ever have success with this? Any good flavor combinations or ones that I should stay away from?
Also, does it matter which vodka I start with?

Re: NBR: Anybody infuse their own vodka?

  • My FIL has done this a couple of times and he said it was really easy and they turned out great! His favorite has been a chile/hot pepper infused vodka that he used in bloody mary's.

  • I always make blueberry vodka for parties. It's easy to make and SO good. I just buy frozen blueberries and pour a bag into the a bottle of vodka that I've emptied a few cups out of. I add a few peppercorns too and some sugar. I let it sit for a few days. Eventually the blueberries macerate and the vodka gets really sweet and delicious. I mean, I drink it straight. It will knock you on your ASS, but it's so good.

I just did a small bottle of Svedka with hot peppers last week!  It was the first time I've done it.  I had a pint of vodka, and I poured it into a mason jar and added one jalepeno and one small red chile (not sure what it was), each just cut in half, seeds in.  I left it on the counter for 2 days, shaking it up every now and then.  When DH told me it was pretty hot (I wouldn't drink something like this at all), I strained it and used a funnel to pour it back into the washed out vodka bottle.  Then I decorated the bottle with chile pepper stickers and gave it to my friend for her birthday.  DH said it was good.  I'm dying to make some fruity ones that I would like.

  • Friends of ours do this every year for the holidays and make cranberry/orange vodka. It's delicious! I'll be interested in hearing how your experience goes, I've been wanting to try it too.
