our budget

utilities 120.00

entertaintment 300.00

fios 90.00

TOTAL EXPENSES $ 3,502.65

--He carpools into work but likes to keep money aside just incase his carpool isn't available. Most days I walk to work but do drive in the case of bad weather (that's why our gas bill is so low, I fill up once a month)

-- Some of the extra money a month is going to go towards wedding and honey moon, I want to keep it available right now just in case something in our budget doesn't pan out as planned

-My student loans will remain like this for another 2 1/2 years until I get loan forgiveness for being a spec. ed. teacher, they will reduce by 17,000, I currently owe over 60,000, after that  I will consolidate both of them. Both loans have a 6% interest rate

- I get paid extra (it varies per month) for working lunch duty, that takes care of my clothing budget as well as some other nominal expenses such as bday gifts.

Re: our budget

  • (What's FIOS?) Overall looks good, some areas I don't see:

    -Personal care/household supplies
    -Retirement
    -Health Insurance
    -Car insurance
    -Life insurance
-Car maintenance/repairs (including oil changes, car registration, AAA membership) (not sure if this is included under "car"

Other areas we include in our budget that you could consider:

-Gifts (mostly for Christmas so we don't have to budget it all in December, also birthdays, weddings, showers, etc.)
-Fun money (both DH and I get a certain amount each month to spend as we please on ourselves)
    -Clothes
    -Charitable donations
-We just put Netflix under entertainment to not have to have a separate area just for that
  • (I did just see that you may already have a plan for clothes and gifts)

eta: fios would be our cable and internet, we're both computer nerds so we need internet

personal care comes out of "entertainment" budget -- I don't get my hair cut (i do it myself) and FI gets his done once a month.
-entertainment is also our fun money

-retirement and Health insurance come out before we get our take home pay so they are accounted for, once we are married it will be cheaper because we will essentially need one plan (same union)

    - car insurance my father handles because of my brother and credit scores, long story short once I get my raises (my union has been in dispute for +3 years, I'm owed a ton in retro plus a few hefty raises)  and married so I can have USAA insurance I will take over this bill and it will be approx 75 a month.

-car maintenance is why the car note is so high, but I do have extra towards that
    - my lunch pay varies from high 2s to low 4s every month, but the amount varies depending on the shift, I treat this as disposable income (clothes, gifts)
    - the car is also brand new (i traded in an older car) so I'm not expecting any maintence issues right now

*we also have 4 months expenses covered in an emergency account which can be stretched to 6 months if need be.
  • No help on your budget but I did want to point out that there is student loan program.  I am like you...owe 60,000.  Teacher loan forgiveness is 17,000 and is great but you still end up owing a lot.  I am doing this program. It takes longer but to my knowledge it will pay all of it at the end.  Just something to think about.  I don't think you can do both programs in the same time frame.
