Kindle Matchbook

I've been reluctant to get on the ereader train because I love to own books.
This is what I've been waiting for.

It's not available on all books yet, but I'm sure as the program grows so will the number of titles.

Thoughts?

Re: Kindle Matchbook

  • I like this! I usually buy the ebooks for my kindle (its more travel friendly for when I deploy), but still like to get the paper version of the books I love to keep my library full. I would like this to work either way (you buy the ebook-> get a discount on the paper copy and vise versa). But I think I would still use this feature on books so I can have my kindle full of books I like and enjoy and have my library at home the same.

  • I love that it is retroactive- you can get the cheap ebook for any paper book you've ever purchased through amazon.

Wonder if b&n will do this too?

  • This is fabulous news!

  • Personally, it doesn't affect me since I don't buy books but in general I think it's a cool idea for those who love their bookshelves but like the convenience of a Kindle book.

I doubt that B&N would follow suit in this, wasn't somebody buying the retail side but not the Nook line?

I hate to say it but this would probably push me over to a Kindle if anything were to happen to my Nook.

I also think it would be harder for b&n to track. You would have to save your receipt and every thing. With amazon it's nice bc the info is all right there.

I really do think that this is a genius move on their part.

  • Amazon already does this with music, right?  I haven't purchased any music in forever but I thought I saw that if you buy a cd from them that you can download the mp3s as well.

    Yup, that's true.

  • I love this feature and am SO excited to see Amazon doing this.  A good example is I bought a specific copy of a Neil Gaiman book for him to sign but now I don't want to read my signed copy so an electronic version would be perfect.

  • LOVE! I bought a copy of Winter of the World back in December when it was one of the holiday specials but I haven't read it yet because it's a big heavy book that is hard to lug around and I do most of my reading outside of the house. If I could get the Kindle version for cheap, it would seriously be next on my TBR.

  • I have been wanting this kind of deal for years!
  • I agree it's a great feature if you purchase books new. I do love to own books, but usually only purchase used if at all.

For me personally, not a huge benefit- but for Amazon as a business? A BRILLIANT business decision, imo. Good for them!

This is awesome. I have put off reading on my Kindle for so long because I love stocking my bookshelves, plus I prefer to buy used copies. But I will definitely be more willing to buy new from Amazon if I know I can get the Kindle copy.

  • I also saw something that Goodreads is going to be available on Kindle too.  But this, this is brilliant.

I think I'm going to have to get a new Kindle now.

  • It's so interesting to me that this appears to be marketing to both types of readers equally. I'm seeing a lot of responses here that people are more likely to purchase Kindles now, whereas people like me are more likely to purchase more physical copies again.

Hooray for ingenuity and good business plans!

  • I'm all over this idea. I already buy multiple copies of my favorites to read again and again and display so it'll just be cheaper for me and I'm likely to do it more often. I hugely prefer to read on my Kindle, but I also love having physical copies of my treasured favorites on my shelves so I can flip through and reread my favorite parts.

This is also perfect if you buy hard copies for gifts- then you can pick up your own copy for Kindle for cheap.

  • It's a good idea, but doesn't really affect me because I rarely buy print books from Amazon. If I'm not getting them from the library, or buying the ebook, then I'm usually picking up a copy at the book store in the mall.

@RevJen - Goodreads already has an app if you have a Kindle that you can get apps on. I have a Kindle Fire, and have the GR app on it. Granted it's not as good as the regular website, but it's just an app.  Are they going to be coming out with a version available for older Kindle models?

I know they already have an app but since Amazon bought GR earlier this year, it's going to be integrated into the platform.

Seriously! Think about it: They're getting people to pay more money for something they already own! And I totally see why. That's amazing.

  • This is a brilliant idea!

But it's totally backwards for me. :(  I always buy the digital version first, because it costs too much to ship the physical book to me, and it's a huge inconvenience to move and store them.  However, there are a few I'd love to have physical copies of to loan out to other people, and if I ever settle down, I'd love to stock huge shelves with all of my favorites!

Ooooh! Ok! I didn't know that. That should be nice! Hopefully much nicer and easier to use than the app.

@jlq2005 @RevJen - The new paperwhite on the amazon website discusses the GoodReads feature. It was released today.
