Re: New Kindle Paperwhite

  • I was looking at one of these to replace my Kindle keyboard.

@RevJen - I've been looking at them for the same reason. DH steals my Kindle keyboard, so perfect excuse for a new one, right??

Totally.  Mine died a couple of months ago.  I've been reading on my phone ever since but I think I may break down and get a Paperwhite for my birthday next month.

  • That time to read feature is cool. It gauges your reading speed and tells you if you have 10 mins left til the end of the chapter. The preview function sounds cool too, though I don't understand fully how it works. If one can easily flip back and forth between the page you're reading in Game of Thrones and the map in the back of the book, that would be awesome. (and that's the example they use, heh.)

I just notices yesterday that the Kindle app already does this. Wish my actual Kindle did!!
  • I have the original Kindle 3G, so if I was to upgrade it would be to the Kindle DX. I like the back lit Paper White, but wifi will not work for my needs. I have brought my Kindle on my deployments and the only country I had trouble accessing the Amazon store and downloading my books was Malaysia. I also brought my laptop with me and never could get it to connect to wifi because there was always a million other people connecting to wifi at the same time. My friend with a Nook had this problem - so Kindle with 3G all the way for me.

  • I have the prior version of the paperwhite so I'm really annoyed that the only way to get GR integration is by buying a new one, this could be done with a software update.  I already have the reading speed feature and I love the built in light, but I won't be getting another one until this one dies.  The preview function sounds great too but it's another item that could be done through an update.

@ewill7911 - I thought the new one came in a 3G version? I may be wrong though but if not they really should.

@jenndawnp - I agree. I was just thinking the other paperwhite hasn't been out very long and they already have a new one with new features. It would be great if they could update the software on older models or at least let you trade them in for credit towards a new model. But this is someone speaking with a Kindle Keyboard haha.

You are so right! I just checked, this makes my day! Too bad my old kindle is still in pristine condition after almost 3 years: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BTI6HBS/ref=fs_cl

  • The reading speed feature would drive me nuts. I know I would be distracted by checking to see if I can beat my reading time.

    It's slippery as waterweed.
  • It's already in the Kindle app.  It was kind of distracting at first because I kept checking to actually SEE if I had 10 minutes left in the chapter to read.  Eventually, I was able to ignore it.

  • I totally want one.  I don't need it, but I'm still lusting after it.

@ewill7911 - Well. It would be a shame if you lost it or dropped it or something.

Ha DH wanted a new laptop forever and two nights ago our new kitten knocked a full can of soda onto his laptop. I'm not convinced he didn't train her to do that.

in the current paperwhite you can change what it shows on the bottom. Between page numbers, location number, and time left. I think percent complete is always shown. So you can hide your time left and not worry about it.

@booknerd226 Hmm, I wonder if that would work with DH. Although I love my kindle so much I am not entirely sure I could do that to it. DH does want a kindle too (so he can read comic books) so maybe I can use that as an excuse to get the new paperwhite and give him mine.
