I have an UO...

I don't want a big house. I am perfectly happy in our <900 Sq. Ft. House.

Re: I have an UO...

  • I could probably join you on that one. Our house is a little over 3,000sq ft, with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. It's an all day process to clean it, and washing the windows alone takes me half a day. I've told H whenever we move, I want 2,500sq ft or less. The upkeep on this big monster is just more than I want to handle.

  • Our house is 1450 sq/ft. My only complaints about it are bathrooms (we only have 1) and lack of storage (no basement or usable attic; no garage). I think I'd be fine with a <2000 sq/ft house if I could just get another bathroom and some dedicated "crap storage" space rather than trying to stuff everything for all seasons and holidays into bedroom/coat closets.

  • I'm with you on that one. Less to clean! Less room to accumulate CRAP. YES PLEASE.
  • The Zillow listing for our house says it's 1,664 sq. ft. We have a lot of rooms but they are small. We have four bedrooms and our queen sized bed, one dresser and a nightstand takes up most of the room. So I guess I don't share your UO...I wish that our house was a little bigger than it is.

  • My house is 1200 sq ft with an unfinished basement but we are finishing it now. That will make our house about 2100 sq ft. Right now we just don't have enough room for our stuff and only one bathroom. I feel like I'm suffocating in it.
The main problem is that DH is a "collector."

  • We have a semi finished basement, I am Fall cleaning today so that's what made me think of this.
  • I think I'd be so cramped in 900sqft! We lived in a 990 apt for a few months and i felt like DH was rightthere all the time. I like my space. I will say that I felt like our 2600sqft house we just sold was huge and had so much unused space. I loved that house and might have felt differently if we had kids, but right now I'm loving the new 2000sqft house. Ill probably feel cramped if we have kids, but whatever! :) Its a perfect size. Everyone is different though!

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my LIGHT, my STRENGTH, and my SONG!

  • We live in a very HCOL area where most people, including young families don't have houses.

We have a 769 sq feet condo (2 beds, 1 bath) and we will live here for the forseable future, ie. at least 1 kid.  It was a big upgrade from our 1 bed basement suite rental!
When we do upgrade we'll likely be able to afford about an 1800 sq feet of townhouse (3 beds, 2 bath and maybe a den). It is what it is and I wouldn't change it for anything.

I've always said I never want a house because I don't want to spend the weekends mowing lawns and gardening.

  • DH and I are in a ~500 sq ft apartment right now, it does sometimes feel really small. We're thinking about moving into a two bedroom soon, which would put us at ~750 square feet (bigger living room!), and that feels like a huge difference. We're used to living in apartments though, so I don't know what it will be like when we eventually move to a house (which we plan to do at some point).

     ~ S & L 8-25-12  ~
  • I loved living in apartments. The biggest I ever had was two bedrooms and that was plenty.  Our first rental house was like 2000-2500 and that was plenty too.  We're in a 4000 square foot house now which sounds huge, but the master is downstairs and since we *wah wah* don't have any kids yet to fill the upstairs, we essentially only go up there to work out in the loft.  So no real cleaning up there and the air conditioner stays off.  It will be alot when the (future) kids get older and messier but I'll take it ;-)

  • Our house is 800sq feet, 2 beds, 1 bath. But that is just the first floor. The attic will one day be finished because even 6'4" DH can walk around comfortably up there.

The basement is already half finished with two rooms plus the other half is unfinished. Basically this adds a den and additional bedroom.

We love our house. We bought it because we walked in and it felt like home. We can easily see ourselves living out our lives here.

Haha... makes me think of Jenna Maroney and 'bragplaint'. And now I'm going to have to watch some 30 Rock after work.

I'm impartial. We rent, so I'm not really attached to our house, and I definitely don't have the home-ownership bug yet. But I'm in the middle, maybe leaning towards cozy rather than cavernous; enough room to for necessary storage (seasonal things, camping gear, etc.), and a guest room. Preferably >1 bathroom, but meh. I've lived with one and it's doable.

I don't know that I'd ever want a large house either, I'd be happy with 1200-1500 sq feet or so.  I have friends who have gorgeous big houses and while they are lovely the first thing I think is "Holy shit, I wonder how much their electric bill is!"  I enjoy living a modest lifestyle and hope to always feel that way. We're currently living in a 500 sq foot apartment (down from a 1000 sq ft apartment) to save money for a down payment on a home in 2014 and surprisingly I don't really even mind something this small. It isn't practical for long term but I'm loving being able to vacuum the whole place using the same plug.

No, technically, it is. The rooms in the basement don't count because they didn't get permits. Basically they don't count for the value, that's why the sq footage is 800.  Unfinished attics and unfinished basements don't count toward the living space. At least, that is how it was explained to me when we bought it.

I dunno. I just go by it. We use the first floor. The attic is only accessible via ladder.

  • I'm pretty sure I would murder DH in a 900sq ft house.

In college he lived in a studio while I was still living on campus (dont get me started on THAT mess). The studio was about the size, if not smaller, than our master now. I basically lived there with him, and it was rough.

Our house now is 2,300sq ft they don't count the basement in that measurement so I don't know what it would be to add that in, but 3/4 of it is finished so that's a nice extra place to get away!

  • I'll jump in a day late. Our apartment is 700 sq. feet. I love it. We do hope to move to a slightly bigger place in the semi-near future, but I love how easy it is to clean. I can vacuum the whole place without having to unplug the vacuum and find a new outlet.

Also, I don't think this is really a UO. Everyone is entitled to like the space they have :)
