  • This has far too many questions to just click a box.  Thank you for the special snowflake option.

I read a few FF back when Twilight FF was all the rage, but that was it.  I'm also pretty sure I didn't keep track of how many books I read or anything back then.  I've only been doing that for the last couple of years.

50SoG is the only FF I know of that is now published.  What other books out there started as FF?  I'm totally curious now!

Someone else can probably confirm or deny, but the Mortal Instruments series started as FF I think.

And yes, MI was originally HP fanfic.

I also want to include books like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies... essentially fan-fiction, right?

  • I read one Twilight fan fiction way back when and was horrified when the Cullen family started passing Bella around and banging her.  I was cured of any desire to ever read fan fiction again.
    90 books in 2015?

  • I read one once online because I wanted to see what it was.  I love the MI series, and didn't find out until here that it was FF.  There are only a few books on the GR link that I recognized (I only looked at the first page), mostly because Amazon thinks that I would like them based on how I rated other books.

I think I would categorize it that way too.

I did attempt it.  It was terrible, I couldn't finish Now my poll answer is a lie.

  • I answered yes although I think it was more yes/no/maybe.  Yes, I read fanfic (online).  No, I don't count it towards my yearly goal.  Maybe, I've purchased a book not knowing it was published fanfic.

I had a period of time when I had a small Law & Order: SVU obsession (I still love the show, but I have moved on from the obsession), and during that time I read a lot of FF. There used to be a site devoted only to SVU FF, and there was some GREAT stuff on there (FTR, I was a huge Elliot and Olivia shipper.).

I have not read stuff from other fandoms, however. I tried a Castle FF because it was written by someone who wrote some of my favorite SVU stuff, but it wasn't the same.

ETA - I never counted it toward my yearly goals.

Thanks for this link.  GR is blocked at work (tragedy of my life) so I'll check it out on my phone later.

SS: I have read some and did not know they were FF. I would count it, if I finished the book, otherwise no.
Edited: I have only read published books, so that is why I would count them.

  • I said no, but I do realize that there are some things I didn't know were originally FF. I've never read FF online. I don't know, I've never thought about it before, but I would count any published book towards my total.

  • Like Susie I read a bunch back when Twilight was big, and everyone was makings recs on the Twi board. There was one that each chapter was a cookie flavor that I really liked. Now that one I would definitely read as a published book. I haven't read any lately. And I never counted it toward my book total.

I read a few Twilight fics back in the day. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, especially since I’m a writer and get that everyone needs an outlet. I stopped reading them when nearly every story seemed like a horny mom’s fantasy of Edward Cullen/Robert Pattinson and it just became uncomfortable for me, like having a front row seat to someone else’s wet dream.

I never counted them as the books I read for the year though. That just seems off somehow.

Most of the more popular fics I’ve either read or just heard of have become published. I have….*feelings* about that, but most of my feelings are about FSoG and how I feel like it’s pure plagiarism. I have a multi paragraph blog post on my feelings about FSoG that I’ll probably never publish…damned feelings.

  • I read 50SoG to see all of the hype and regret it.  I have also read City of Bones before I knew about it being FF.  I am going to go check the list, there might be another one or two that I was not aware of.

  • Confession. I had no idea what fan fic was until I started this board. I still don't really get it.

  • I read fanfic in college... and wrote some.  I was on a scifi channel board back in the day (way before they changed the name to Syfy ) that used to do round robin writing of Sliders fanfic.  That was pretty entertaining.  Then I read a bunch of HP ff, but got tired of accidentally getting into something smutty or slashy or with weird pairings.  I posted a 13ish chapter hp ff on fanfiction.net, but mine was only ff insomuch as it was based on the world of HP.... and there were occasional cameos of Rowling's characters in the first chapter, but they were the blink-and-you'll-miss-it type.  Those characters were never named (I don't think... it's been over 10 years since I looked at it).  In fact, I moved the plot to Massachusetts about 3 chapters in, so then it was only hp ff in its treatment of magic.

I have not read 50SoG, but I did read City of Bones before I knew it was ff, so I guess I could have read others.

Back when I was sucked into the vortex of Twilight mania, I was also introduced to FF. I started reading them and thought some were good and others were terrible. What amazed me the most was that a lot of them, in no way, resembled Twilight. They were all human with their own character development and plots. The only thing that made them FF was that their characters were named Edward and Bella and they usually had the same physical appearance.

FF introduced me to writing. There were stories I wanted to read and couldn't find, so I decided to write them for myself. Others encouraged me to post them on ff.net and that's how it all started for me. It was nice to post things and get immediate feedback on them. Also, you're in a fandom with like-minded people who want to read more, more, more. I realized the more I worte, the better I got and the more I liked it. Once my third, full-length story was posted I'd already dealt with so much drama from that fandom, so many catty grown ass women and hypocritical writers. And I wasn't even a popular FF writer! Seriously, my friends read my stuff and that was about it. I had enough and pulled all my work down.

Though, at this point, it doesn't matter. Once something is on the internet, it is always on the internet. Sigh. Seriously, I just searched my last story and the fourth link on Google is a PDF on a Polish website. Whaaa?

As you can see, from that list on Goodreads, there are TONS of published fics. Honestly, most of them were wildly popular in the fandom, so that probably helped them outside of it.

And after all that, to answer the question, I stopped reading fanfic pretty much when I pulled my work.

Ah! This fic was Wide Awake. This was EPIC as far as ff goes. It was the first one I read.

  • Sometimes but I usually avoid them because most of the writing is garbage. None of the ones I read are based off books, though, or have been turned into books.
I usually only read TMNT or Pokemon video games fanfics.
I even write them sometimes when I'm bored, but they usually don't get published.
I would never count any of it towards my book total.

  • Special Snowflake. I used to read a lot of FF (mostly Twi, some HP). I even dabbled a bit and wrote some. Like Skeez said, lots of great stuff out there, even more unreadable twaddle. I never counted it towards my reading goals. And I also have all kinds of feelings about fics pulled to publish, so I will not be intentionally reading anything P2P.

  • I used to read a ton of Twilight and HG fanfic (including yours, @skeezon and @nanna), but never counted them toward my yearly goal.  Though, to be fair, I wasn't really reading else; I was completely sucked by TwiFic.

I left the fandom when writers started to pull their works in order to publish them.  No matter how "different" the characters were from the originals--or how well-written the stories--I couldn't stand the fact that my favorite writers were selling out.
  • There were a couple of HP fanfics that I really enjoyed.  Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of it so I don't know how it ends.  But I would never count them toward a reading goal.
