It's about to get real (a story in pictures)

Here's hoping that this

and this

gives us this

Basically, we are here now, officially.

CD1 showed up like clockwork today, and I had to say goodbye to the nurse I really like (I have to go to another office because I have to see the head RE because mine left). She told me to call next week for the appointment to go over options, and I asked if this meant they suggested IVF. She hesitated, so I added, "Because that's the direction we are hoping for for our own mental health." She then confirmed that would be the next step for us. I hope to get an appointment this cycle so we can get the ball rolling.
Basically I'm feeling scared, hopeful, sad, and scared. Anyone care to share what I should expect? What's an IVF cycle like? **Off to check out Resolve, too**

Re: It's about to get real (a story in pictures)

  • You want triplets?

    Just kidding. :)

The cycles are waaaaaay longer than I realized. Forget about 4 weeks cycles... they're like 7. Lupron is typically the first med, and it calms your ovaries. It makes me very hot and very angry - both are normal side effects that are a blast.

Then you start stims, which are the intimidating part because they involve mixing meds or using the "pen" instead of just a needle. But... do it once or twice, and you're golden. They weren't a big deal to me.

When you have lots of happy little follicles, the egg retrieval happens. I was awake and mine was NOT FUN. But whatever. I got to ride around in a wheelchear and drink a lot of Gatorade afterwards, so there were silver linings. EMbryo transfer was exciting. I felt emotionally pregnant.

Good luck to you!! I hope it is a success! :)

  • Wow, exciting! Sounds like you're comfortable with your decision and that's important.

As far as what to expect, I think it all really depends on your protocol. Lurk on the IF board and I think you'll see there are so many different ways a cycle can go. I learned a lot from the board. Also, while it's certainly not my favorite thing, IVF was no where near as bad (mentally/physically) as I expected. But again, I think my protocol was waaaay less intense than others so that probably affects my thoughts on the process.

Ask lots of questions. Read lots. And reach out for support when you need it. It's scary but exciting. Good luck!!

  • Thanks, everyone. It's kind of surreal that we're here. I had a feeling something was wrong the summer of 2012 when we weren't expecting after 6 months. I know it can take a year, but it was just a feeling I had, and I also thought we'd end up here, at IVF. I've been preparing for this for over a year, so I think I'm the most comfortable with it. I'm going to have DH come with my next week to my therapy appointment because I think it'd be good for him, given the reality of where we're at. I know he's on board, but I'd like him to come.

  • Good Luck! IVF takes a long time, that was also my big surprise and there are a lot of appointments are monitoring to go to. The shots suck, especially if you end up with a protocol that calls for PIO shots. I'm hoping you finally get your take home baby!

  • I'm sorry it had to come to this. I'm not going to pretend IVF is fun, but it's definitely doable. I sort of looked at it in shorter increments, e.g. x number of days until this or that appointment, change in meds, etc. Lots of luck to you! You have lots of women to talk to about it here. :)

Spin gave the advice I was going to give. Lupron was not my first step, it was birth control pills. The suppression phase is what makes it long. Then you just move chunk by chunk. After bc, AF and baseline check (just like with iuis) then stims start. Sorry I can't speak to the whole cycle, but its a wild ride so far. GL poppies!! You've got this
