The Pledge of Allegiance in Schools

Since you ladies are from all over the country, I always see things in my newsfeed about "growing up in the good ole days"  and many of them say that school started with the pledge. Every school I've substituted for has started the day with the pledge. Do any of you know of schools that don't do this? (obviously those outside of the USA would not say our pledge lol)

I moved all around as a kid and we always started the day with the Pledge.

  • I'm not sure we did in high school, but it's possible I just don't remember correctly. This was quite some time ago, though. ;)

In third grade, Sister Margaret Ann made us sing the Pledge. That's right, sing.

I have no idea what schools do now. I realize I didn't/can't answer your question at all. lol.

  • I always started with the pledge but honestly I wish they would get rid of it. I'm not particularly religious, it doesn't bother me but I know it does bother others. I'm all for supporting every race, religion and creed and starting the day pledging allegiance under god isn't very supportive of others' faiths.

  • We did it everyday. DH used to be a teacher here in Texas, and they used to do the pledge of allegiance and the Texas pledge. Yes, you heard me...the Texas pledge. Texas is a very strange country, I mean state.

  • I don't remember what we did in HS (I remember it in K-8), but our school does the Pledge every morning. I say it, but I omit "under God" when I do. I have had several students not stand or not say it, so I ask them to just be silent and respectful to those of us who do say the Pledge. I've never had a problem.

  • We had to stand and recite or get detentions in k-8 and when we got to high school it was all optional but it was provided. We also had a prayer room students could use.

  • I think we said it for all 12 years I was in US schools. I do remember it from elementary and high school (at least the one I went to for grades 9-10), so I suspect my middle school did it too. I stopped saying the "under god" part in high school but joined the class for the rest.

Hmm... I think you should have to stand for the pledge just as a sign of the respect for the country you live in. I don't think you should be forced to say it because it says under god, but I would rather the kids say it and omit the under god part.
The right to sit during the pledge has been litigated over and over. Anyone has the right to sit and/or not say the pledge. I ask my students to sit silently if they choose to sit, and it's never been a problem. I see it as the same respect I'd give if I went to temple with my friend. Just because I'm not participating doesn't mean I shouldn't be silent and respectful to those who are.

Wow. Your district is lucky no one ever fought this!
As a disclaimer, I also know that as long as there are tests and quizzes, there will be prayer in schools. ;)

  • Yeah, I have no problem with people omitting the parts they aren't comfortable with- the words or the standing. I do think it should be said in schools, however.

  • We never said the pledge until after 9/11.  At that point I was in high school, and it was optional - I never participated.  I don't know if I would now, either.  That said, I'm okay with it being said in schools provided it's optional.

We always said it, but were free to omit parts or sit if we so chose. DH went to a private high school, and it was up to the individual teachers to lead it because they either didn't have or didn't use a PA system. Many of them didn't lead it (either forgot or elected not to).

    (Edit for clarity.)

It has to be, otherwise the district could have the ACLU up in their business if a family/student decides to complain. SCOTUS has already ruled on this, and schools that discipline students for not standing/reciting receive lots of negative press (a Maryland high school was in hot water just last year).

  • I teach at the school I went to, and we've always said it immediately after a moment of silence. We just ask students to be respectful during both and of course we can't say what to do during the moment of silence.

  • I am a 7th grade teacher and we start the day with the Pledge of Allegiance. Students are not required to say the Pledge, but they do have to stand to show respect.
  • We said the pledge all 12 years (it was said over the school intercom). All 3 schools I have taught at do the pledge daily. I teach pre-k where we have different kids for morning and afternoon and our afternoon kids say the pledge too.

  • I'm not sure about jr high and high school (don't remember) but I know in elementary school we did the US pledge, the Texas pledge, and the Christian flag pledge (private Christian school). I always liked it when it was my turn to be the flag holder lol
