GTKY- Languages

Do you speak a language other than English?
Did you take a language in school?

Re: GTKY- Languages

  • Only English and I can understand a few words and numbers in Spanish that's all. Last time I took a foreign language was in middle school.

  • I can speak and understand some Spanish. I took 2 years of Spanish in middle school, 1 year in high school, and 2 courses in college. When I went to Mexico I was able to hold a conversation with locals and our tour guides.
  • I took Spanish, but don't remember any of it. I can speak enough French to survive and feed myself. I know some sign language. I also speak " medicine" fluently.

  • I took French in high school and spoke it well enough to get by when I went to France. Now I can pick up words here and there.

  • I tried Spanish and French, HORRIBLE! To the point my professor fought for me to take other course because she saw how hard I was trying and couldn't get it. I do have a learning disability so they think that was probably the cause of it hah. Math, grammar and languages are all missing from my brain! ha!

  • I took a year of Spanish in high school and remember little bits. It is a pain because Spanish is H's first language and most of his family on speak Spanish. Oops. I get by though.

  • I took a few years of French and then a little bit of German, Spanish and Japanese.  I only know basic words in the last 3.  I can still understand French a little, but it's been awhile.

  • I took 3 years of Spanish in high school and 3 semesters in college but I couldn't say another other than "Como estas?" Seriously. I'm the worst. I would love to be able to speak another language.

  • I speak Spanish (learned it growing up in Mexico...and then supplemented it with collage courses to correct my bad small town Mexican countryside grammer)

I took ASL (American Sign Langauge) in Collage and remember bits and pieces, I could get by as long as we talk about animals, families or I just fingerspell everything

I took French from grade 4-8 but don't remember anything and butcher everything I attempt to read.

I'd LOVE to learn German...since that's my actual "background"...but no one in my family speaks German anymore.

  • I took two years of Spanish in high school and 1 semester in college.  I still remember some words and phrases, but definitely not enough to survive if I had to have a conversation with someone who only spoke Spanish.  I know some American Sign Language.  I started taking a class, but never finished it.  I probably am better at ASL than Spanish.  I also can count to 10 in French.  I learned that when I took ballet when I was 8 years old.  It is amazing that I remember that, but can't remember a lot of the Spanish I learned in high school.  I guess that is why it is important to teach children second languages at younger ages!

  • I can have a limited conversation in American Sign Language, I used to be pretty fluent, at least able to express anything I wanted to with limited vocabulary, but I've lost a lot of it. H is fluent in Hungarian, so lately that had been my language endeavor. H's parents are finding Hungarian textbooks for me and I'm actually reading them. I really want to learn :-)
