What my HP collection says about my life

I was slightly reorganizing my bookshelves over the weekend, and I realized that my terribly mismatched Harry Potter books kind of reflect my life over the period that JKR wrote them...

Sorcerer's Stone -- Missing.
Clearly I felt the need to share the series, and at some point the first book got loaned out and never returned.

Chamber of Secrets & Prisoner of Azkaban -- Trade paperbacks, purchase on sale at Target.
I was a poor college student, but my sister and her wife were really into HP, so I wanted to know what the fuss was about.

Goblet of Fire -- Trade paperback, purchased as soon as it was available.
I liked the series, but I like my books to match. I decided to hold off until the trade paperback was released, so that it would match.

Order of the Phoenix & Half-Blood Prince -- Hardcover, purchased on release day.
Forget matching! Must. Have. Newest. Book! (Besides, it had gotten so popular among everyone I knew that if I didn't read it within 24 hours, someone was going to spoil something by accident!)

Deathly Hallows -- Hardcover, UK edition.
In between books, I moved to Norway. There was no way I could possibly get my hands on a US edition fast enough, so it was time to forget all about having a matching set!

I've always thought about buying new copies to have a full series, but now I think I might stay with my eclectic mix. And to replace Sorcerer's Stone, I might pick up a UK paperback, because the first time I ever saw them was at W.H.Smith in Paris. Back when I had absolutely no idea what they were or why they were taking up so much table space!

Re: What my HP collection says about my life

  • The new boxed set with Hogwarts on the side is GORGEOUS. If I could impulse spend $100 they would have totally come home with me from B&N over the weekend.

  • I have a paperback boxed set in pristine condition that I will never actually read. If I do a reread, I will probably spring for the ebooks.

  • I'm digging the adult covers on the UK versions that I've been getting.

  • I have three copies of Sorcerer's Stone.

    1) Collector's Edition
    2) As close to a first edition, first printing as I can afford (first edition, fourth printing)
    3) Regular, everyday copy

@jackiback - I bought it this weekend for $70 at Target, but it's less than $60 on amazon! It is sooo gorgeous. Love the new covers!

  • I have DH's hardback set, my half paperback/half hardback set, the new paperback box set with new covers to save for future children (which is years away but it was the only way I could justify buying them to DH. I also have the ebooks.

I want the UK children's covers. So bad.

  • I have a full hardback set, and I really want that new paperback set! I also am starting up a collection of foreign editions. I want a book in the language of every country I visit. So far I have the UK Philosopher's Stone and French Chamber of Secrets. I need to get Spanish and Italian. I tried so hard to find Gaelic when I was in Ireland, but I couldn't even find a Gaelic language bookstore. I guess that just means I need to go back!

  • A better person would be embarrassed by my collection. I have 1-4 in trade PBs, two copies of 1 in UK PBs, the entire collection in UK PBs (with a collector's box), the whole series in HB plus an extra HB of OOTP & HBP. That's ... what? 21 actual HP books? Plus the Fantastic Beasts & Quidditch books. Then, the new PB set is on my Christmas wish list for this year.

    I might have a problem. It's awesome.
  • Oh, @jenandtonica... you reminded me that I have the UK Tales of Beedle the Bard and Quidditch Through the Ages, too.

    And that's not a problem, that's awesome.

  • @Young_Love Yes! Beedle the Bard! That, too. But I just have the US version. Womp.

p.s. I'm trying to tag you. If it doesn't work, it'll be obvious. If it does, you all can just laugh at me. I feel like a tech-dumb old lady.
  • IT WORKED. I have all the smarts!
  • I have a mix of hardcovers and paperbacks.  I just sent DH an e-mail telling him he could buy me the box set as a present and I'd be happy..

  • I have like three hardcover and 2 PB copies of Goblet of Fire because that was the point of the series where I was like OMG THIS IS THE BEST SERIES EVAR, MUST GET ALL FRIENDS HOOKED. (Sooo not like me, right?)

So I kept buying copies, lending them out and forgetting.....

  • @EliStar Speaking of getting friends hooked on books, I was SO EXCITE about HG that I actually lent my *signed* copy out to a friend. WTF was I thinking?!

Thankfully she is a good friend who a) returned the book; and b) it was intact.

OMG. The thought of loaning out any of my signed books gives me hives! *I* don't even read my signed books.

  • My first does not match at all, the first 2 books we paperbacks, and the rest were hardcover. Last Christmas DS#1, only 6 at the time started getting into HP, so we totally impulse buy the box Set for $80 with coupons that was a family gift, it was love at first for all of us ;). DS#1 is a now a full on die hard HP fan, He is seriously addicted, you ladies should see his christmas list all things Gryffindor/HP ( yep, he's definitely my kid ;)
  • I read the first 6 the summer that 7 came out, so they were all paperback. I was pretty strapped for cash at the time so PB was the only way to go. Then when 7 came out I couldn't wait for the paperback so I just boughten it. So it's a bit mismatched too.

  • I just read the series for the first time via the Kindle Lending Library, so I read one book a month through July. I honestly have no idea what took me so long, especially since I'd seen all the movies. I'm asking for the hardcover set for Christmas this year, and if I don't get it, I'm going to buy it myself. I do kind of love that I'll have a whole matched set when I do get them. Now the decision will be old covers or new... :)

  • I have all paperback except the last two. But I'm just patting myself on the back that I own them all because I didn't even read more than the first two until this year!

  • I had a full hardback set, but #6 has gone missing, and none of my friends will admit to borrowing it

I really need to develop some kind of check-out system.
I also have an original UK paperback of #1 with the cartoon cover from before they came out with adult covers.  I bought it in London 13 years ago.  It makes me happy for all kinds of reasons.  I bought the Fight Club paperback that same day at the same store, which I think probably says something very weird about me.
I'm kind of in love the the UK adult covers now though, so I may have to pick up a few after I replace my HB #6.
