Is anyone familiar with Bladder Cancer?

So... a couple week ago, we found out my grandmother has bladder cancer. She had all the diagnostic stuff done and at each appointment they've found it's worse than first anticipated. (The first appt they wanted to go in and take some cells for a biopsy. cool, fine. They get in for the biopsy and find a tumor, so they make another appt to remove the tumor. Fine, get the sucker out. Today was the tumor surgery, and now they are saying that they need to remove the entire bladder because the tumor is too big and is starting to impact the function in one of her kidneys.) Granted, this is third hand information by the time it gets to me, but still. I'm freaking the fuck out, guys.

I know that (unfortunately) many of you have dealt with some form of cancer or another--does anyone have any anecdotes or positive-outcome stories? (as positive as possible, considering the subject matter.)

Can I get some hair pats? I feel like I'm coming unraveled.

Re: Is anyone familiar with Bladder Cancer?

  • I dont have any words of wisdom, but Im so sorry you're dealing with this.

  • First, I'm so sorry to hear about your grandmother. Cancer fucking sucks.

I actually do have experience with bladder cancer. My Papa was diagnosed with Stage III bladder cancer in April of 2012. It happened in very much the way you describe (slow worse and worse news). It was very, very scary and horrific. My Papa is very much the adored patriarch of my closeknit Italian maternal family and the thought of losing him was terrifying.

I'm not going to lie, it was quite the battle and we had to come together as a family to help with things like surgery prep and recovery and doctors visits that he couldn't drive himself to. It was awful. But the chemo and surgery worked. He has to have a colostomy bag but he is alive, and he is healthy. It's a difficult road but remission is very much possible.

I will be praying for you and your family and your grandmother. If you ever need to talk, let me know. XOXO

  • Thanks everyone, I truly appreciate your thoughts, prayers and hugs.

@amandaf6383, Thank you for sharing about your Papa. While I'm sorry your family had to go through that, I'm really glad to hear he's in remission and is here and healthy. I hope we have a similar outcome. and @cheezus, I hope that this was caught soon enough to be treated. I'm just concerned since the tumor had already grown large enough to destroy too much of her bladder to save, who knows what else could have been going on...  I'm glad your H's gpa did well with chemo and is in the clear!

I don't know exactly what we're dealing with re: stage of the cancer just yet, but they have a rush on the pathology of the tumor, so we should be finding out shortly. (they initially said they'd have results in a week; but that was before this whole thing went to hell in a handbasket. So I'd imagine we'd know this week sometime...) I guess once we have that information, then we'll be looking at the need for chemo/radiation/whatever it may be. I just feel so...lost, I guess. :-/

Thanks again, everyone. I appreciate all your support. I'm so sorry anyone ever has to deal with this bullshit. Fuck cancer, seriously.

  • I'm so sorry your grandma and whole family is dealing with. Seriously, everyone was right when they cancer effing sucks. My pop-pop died from liver cancer; it was awful.

I would think (this is my unprofessional opinion) that so long as the tumor is local to her bladder and hasn't metastasized, removing her bladder should give her a great prognostic outcome (if inconvenient one with needing a bag). Praying for the best!!

  • Another vote for "fuck cancer." I'm sorry you, your grandmother, and the rest of your family are going through this. I do know someone w/bladder cancer who is going through chemo treatments now, but I'm not close enough to know all of the details, so I'm no help there.

I'm sorry about the diagnosis. Not that I have experience with bladder cancer, but having watched many famiky members battle and lose to cancer, all I can suggest is being there with love, support and hope. Funny stories and jokes. It sounds lame, but those are the things that make us feel human.

  • Thank you everyone. I appreciate your comments <3 You guys are the best!

@luckyangel07, @littlelady77 and @ecinereb , I'm going to go along with what you guys said and try to stay positive. While,  yes, she will need a bag for the rest of her life, it really sounds (to me, as far as we know at this point) as if this thing has stayed in the bladder. Hopefully once that's out, she'll be on the mend.
  • I'm sorry. I'll say a prayer for your grandma!
