Marriage Counseling: How Long?

Hello All,
I am new here to posting on The Nest (though I have been lurking for a while). My husband and I are going through a process of improving our relationship and our lives in general over the next year. Hoping to learn a few things while on the nest from other people who have gone through something similar.
For those of you who have gone through marriage counseling, how long did you go for? and when did you know that you were "done going"? We went for our first session and the counselor asked us "What does success look like for you? When will you know when you're done?" We really didn't know what to say and I didn't want to set an unrealistic expectation like "we never fight again."
I know that every relationship is different, but I am just wondering what success looked like for other people.
