Another nursing question

I work in a school as a 1:1 support. I work with clients from 8:30 am until 2:30 pm, during which time I don't get a break. I eat lunch with my client and am by their side at all times except for an occasional bathroom break or if I need to walk away because I just need to get away. My clients have serious behavioral issues.

How does that work for pumping? I know my job has to allow me time to do that, but just how much time I guess is my question.

LO will most likely be at the daycare connected to my building and I have the ability with the daycare to go over a nurse if I can get away. So, that's another option.

What are your work experiences with BFing?

Re: Another nursing question

  • I have no answers for you but am interested in the answer and piggy backing off your thread. :)

I work 10-12 hour days (sometimes longer) and my job is unpredictable. I'm a restaurant manager so I have no idea when I can plan to pump as it depends on flow of business. How often do/would you BF'ing mama's pump if you were away that long?

  • I would recommend finding a way to get about a 20 minute break to pump. I always pumped 2x a day while at work plus once (or nursed) before I left in the morning. What you need to do will depend on your supply and nursing schedule.

  • To clarify, I work 7am to 4pm. I usually pumped or nursed around 6:00, then at 10:00 and 2:00. I know others pumped more often than that.

The general rule of thumb is to pump each time your baby gets a bottle.  It will depend somewhat on how long your baby goes between feedings and how much he eats at each feeding.  This is also assuming your pumping output can keep up with his needs.

Kellymom has a ton of info on pumping at work:

As an example, here is what I do, although it is worth noting that I have low supply so we combo feed:

    6:00 wake up, nurse
7:00 I pump after showering while doing my hair/makeup
8:00 I nurse him at daycare before dropping him off
10:00 he has a bottle at daycare, I pump at work
12:00 I go to nurse him (sometimes I eat lunch while feeding him, sometimes I eat when I get back to work)
(12:45 he has a bottle to supplement after nursing)
2:00 he has a bottle at daycare, I pump at work
    4:00 bottle/pump
5:00 I pick him up, we are home by about 5:30-5:45, by the time I unpack the car, change out of my work clothes, and change his diaper, he is ready to nurse.  After he nurses, I give him a bottle and then put him down for a nap.  I pump while he naps.
8:00 nurse, then DH feeds him a supplement bottle while I pump
10:00 nurse, supplement bottle, pump, and he goes to sleep

Right now he may eat in the MOTN (usually around 4:30 or 5) about 50% of nights.

  • Oh, and my work pumping breaks are about 20 minutes.  Fifteen of that is actual pumping, and the rest is setting up and cleaning up.
