WIJFR: The Eye of the World (sp)

Phew!  That was intense!  It's such a dense book.  I had hopes of going strait into The Great Hunt, but I think I need a break.

I gave it three stars.  I feel like I might have given it 4 if I hadn't have to return it to the library and it was broken up into two reading segments.  I have so many thoughts on the book, though I don't think I can properly express them. I love all the characters.  I can't wait to find out more about them.  I want to know more about Rand and Egwene and why they are not meant for each other.  I love Nynaeve and and I want Lan (I'm not sure how to spell it. I listened and a quick Google search didn't help) to stop being stubborn.

I'm curious about Moiraine.  She's so mysterious. I want to know more about Perrin and his wolf speaking abilities.  The only one that I've been so/so on is Matt (again, I'm not sure of the spelling).  I feel betrayed by the dagger and I still don't trust him.

For those who have read the whole series, how do the rest compare?

Re: WIJFR: The Eye of the World (sp)

  • I've only read 4 so far but I plan to finish eventually.  I have to take breaks in between because, like you said, they're so dense.  I need to go live with other characters for a while and take a break from the Two Rivers folks.  So far so good, but they are long winded and very detailed.

  • I gave this book two stars. I enjoyed the story and felt that while there was some novelty, it was also formulaic, like typical fantasy novel with "special" youths setting out on a journey.

Each book is a little different, in terms of overall story progression, character points-of-views, and time passage. I didn't really get into it until book 3. While reading through the series, I found there were times when I just wanted to skip to the next book (because it felt like the same information/phrase/etc. just kept getting repeated over and over again) and times when I just couldn't get enough of the current one.

What I liked most about the series is how the characters change because of their experiences and how their relationships evolve.  I totally understand how you feel about Mat at this point. He's a bit of a selfish jerk.

  • Man it has been soooo long since I read it the Eye of the World. We're talking 1999 is when I started this series (but tEofW itself was published first in 1990) and the last book was published this year. So yeah, kind of a big blur!

But from memory, the first and second books were my favorites.  The third was good but there is one very distinctive thing different about it from all the other books in the series (not a plot point at all, but I still don't want to spoil what I am talking about unless you give me the go ahead). Then the very last book was one of my favorites. So books 4-13 varied and I can't really remember them too much overall how much I liked/disliked them.

These books just have so many characters in it and more characters get added on in basically every single book. I won't lie, it gets overwhelming. I personally recommend breaks between books, you could get burned out on them easily since they are just so long and intricate. Hard to read them back to back more than maybe two books at a time.

I would be OK with not hearing that again for awhile.  Just say it's fate and get it over with, you know!

  • Is there a little romance in the books? I know it's not that type of story, but I'd love a little bit of lightness thrown in with the doom and gloom.

There is!  It is PG-13 and occurs naturally as the series progresses. I found there were even some swoon-worthy moments.

  • LOL yes there is romance. You'll see. But not smexy romance, PG-13 fade to black romance. But all of the main characters do fall in love with someone else in one way or another.

Wait until you realize a damn wind will blow at the beginning of every book. In great detail. :P

  • You will find Mat more amusing as you go. Every book has its exciting parts, interesting parts, and dull parts where RJ describes yet another inn in detail. I like this series because it is complex. We have alot of questions as readers, but every novel answers many so you don't feel overwhelmed and lost. There is romance, loyalty, love, betrayal, twists, lots of magic. If you want an epic fantasy, then you will by no means be disappointed, RJ builds a richly developed world. But if you want an easy read, YA series, then you should quit now.

  • There is a prequel called "New Spring: The Novel" and follows Moiraine as she's finishing at the Tower. It's very enlightening with regards to the Dragon prophecy, the workings of the Tower, and the inner thoughts of Lan and Moiraine. Plus, there are no series spoilers. You might enjoy reading that next. It's short - a stand alone novel.

  • I am about 50 or so pages into The Great Hunt and I am enjoying it. I, like you, needed a break too and put it down to read War of the Worlds. When I was little my dad read the Belgariad series to me and I loved it, I reread it back in 2008 and this series reminds me of some of what I liked about that. Also the Sword of Truth series- which has a little more romance then the Belgariad. I felt like I was able to read through the Sword of Truth faster/easier then the Eye of the World.

I certainly don't mind epic stories.  I have a special place for them, but they are also a brain suck.  I need some space to breathe between.  I mean, I survived GoT and Outlander and loved them.  I'm not comparing stories, just that they are rich, dense books, but you also come out of them exhausted but happy.
