Longer cycles... thoughts?

The last two cycles have been 40+ days for me. The last year my cycles were all 28-33 days (except one random 42 day cycle this January which was definitely stress induced). I haven't changed anything other than starting to bike to work 3x a week (10 mile round trip). I actually also left a very stressful job and my overall anxiety/stress levels have gone way down. Can increasing exercise (it isn't even that strenuous) mess up cycles, even if I am eating enough? I also run 4-5x a week, but I've been running for a couple years so that's not new. We are gearing up to TTC in the next 3 months and I'm a little PO'd that after finally regulating a year after getting off BC, and keeping regular for a year, my cycles are getting crazy again.

So is this worth worrying about, or should I just give it time and then run it by my OB at my appointment in a the next couple months?

Re: Longer cycles... thoughts?

  • I have long cycles. As a snapshot, my last 5 cycles have been 41, 35, 37, 42, and 33 days. I had 39, 41, and 41 day cycles back-to-back over the winter.

I'd probably give yourself a few more cycles to see how things go. If they continue to be that long, I'd bring it up with your OB. If mine kept consistently hitting the 40-day mark, I'd definitely be bringing it up. Even O-ing on my own, it can't be good having cycles last that long all the time.

Thanks @LuckyAngel07! It's nice to have some feedback. I'll bring it up at the appt, but try not to worry too much in the mean time...

Oy...Hopefully at least that means O is here and you'll be done with this cycle soon.

ETA: Deleted that second sentence, because DUH, you're not TTC yet and I totally spaced on that. :P

  • When I started gaining more muscle (which still translates into fat loss so I don't know if you've lost any weight since adding the bicycle thing in) my cycle changed.  The obgyn said it's because estrogen is stored in fat and when you lose it/turns into muscle the estrogen is released into your body and can affect your cycle.  You can certainly ask, as I don't know if this is your situation, but my guess is that it WILL regulate after a couple more months. Or it may stay this way, but be regular. Keep us updated.

That makes a lot of sense. I do think I've lost some fat/gained muscle by biking (hello quads and glutes!). Not a huge amount, but I'm thinking this is probably a factor. Thanks for the input @DangerMuffin23!

  • Your cycles can always change but I'd bring it up to the OB just to make sure there isn't more going on.
