Mom update and now Dad

Mom update - she's doing so much better. She said she slept good last night which was something she hasn't done in months. She should be out today!!!

Dad - Yesterday he had an appt to go over all his lab work he's been getting done. He's now on medicines for blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes! He's not happy. At one point my mom tried to get him to do the 17 day diet (low carbs) with her and he said "I gave up beer, and chewing tobacco... I can't give up my breads!" Um yea.. now you are!

Now I'm double screwed with 2 parents with diabetes. More reason for me to really work out and start eating a lower carb diet. Dad said he'll start when mom gets home.  I think it's time for H and I to start too... Now I need to pin lower carb dinners, start there.

Re: Mom update and now Dad

  • Glad to hear about your mom!!  Good luck to your dad in giving up his breads ;) I'm sure he'll get with the program.

I LOVE the blog ohsheglows.com, it's actually vegan but she also has some low carb stuff and tons of super super healthy recipes.  (I'm not affiliated with the site, just a fan.)  And if you want, you can check out my fitness board, user name Evan Katherine :)  I'm a huge fan of HIIT (high intensity interval training) and fitness in general.  Best of luck in your health journey!

  • So glad to hear that your mom is feeling much better now!  And so sorry to hear about your dad.  But, on the bright side at least he has support from your mom and if you and your H start with a similar diet, that will also help him.  I think that will definitely make it easier on everyone involved :)

  • Yay about your mom.  Boo about your dad.

I don't think that he has to completely give up carbs, he just needs to find a balance.  DH and I are doing a super low carb diet right now and it kind of sucks in the beginning, but it does get better.

    my read shelf:
Cathy (CathyL7910)'s book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • @cathy7910 - He said the doctor told him it was borderline, but his A1C was as high as my mom and she's on insulin shots (I checked his paperwork).  A1Cs check your sugar over time (3-4 months I think),and I think normal is  between 3 and 6, dad's was 7.8.  That seems more than borderline.  I think over 7 is when they told my mom she was no longer borderline, but a diabetic.

I told him to start with dinner because you body needs time to digest carbs, but he's going to have slowly make some big changes.  He's a grazer, and it's always carbs (breads, crackers, sweets).  He is on pills, it's actually what my mom started on when she was borderline.  They will probably do a blood test in 3 months to check it again.  Funny, I just realized they didn't ask him to test his blood sugar - weird.

I did the 17day diet in the past and it does suck, but then you start craving carbs less.  I want to start with dinner myself, but allow for some cheat dinner out or a pot of whole wheat pasta once a month.

  • They watch my DH's a1c because he is "at risk". They like it under 5.4 or so I think. Above that is "pre diabetic" or worse.
  • I am happy to hear your mom is improving.  I am sorry to hear about your dad.  My dad also has diabetes.  He only takes pills and he no longer tests his blood sugar because he says it doesn't matter, but I only it does.  My dad changed a lot when he was first diagnosed.  He was a huge soda drinker and cut it all out cold turkey.  He has slowly fallen back into bad ways, mostly ice cream and cake.  He doesn't understand/care that little things make a huge difference and he's hurting himself.  He has complications, like numbness all the time in his legs.

I hope your father is able to make changes that will keep him healthy.  I'm continuing to keep your family in my prayers!
  • Glad to hear about your mom!! Hopefully she continues to improve!

I'm sorry to hear about your dad!! Hopefully hearing it will kick start him into caring and taking action. When my dad was diagnosed he checked his blood sugar constantly. He'd eat something and then test his sugar later and for a long time he was off of insulin just by watching his diet, and he lost 50 pounds. He's not as good now, but he's also got other things going on. Good luck to him and to you if you're starting as well!!!

Yea my mom was in the 6 range for years and they called her borderline/pre-diabetic.  When she got up over 7 is when they called it diabetic.

This might be a good thing to get my dad to be on the same page as my mom with their food choices.  And I'm jumping on board because I feel like I have a double bullseye on me now... so that means Jeff is coming with me!  At least in the food we eat together.  I asked him if would support me with this and he said yea.  He can still have his mcdonald's etc for lunch if he wants.

  • Good news for your mom, sorry about your dad.

I don't think you need to cut out carbs completely...just cut back and eat the "right" kind of carbs. Whole grains as opposed to white flour, fruits and veggies as opposed to sweets and processed food. You have to make a lifestyle change, and no one is going to give up their favorite foods forever. You just have to eat less of it and make healthier choices most of the time.

I think there's also a when you eat them that affects your blood sugar too.  I've read you should eat your fruit in the morning and your carbs by 2pm so you have time to digest it and use it before you go to bed.

  • My mom was just diagnosed yesterday. I'm not shocked at all but she thought she had a uti and went to the doctor. Her a1c was 8.5. I told get she needs to find a primary care doctor she likes (she is between doctors right now because she didnt like the last office) and an endocrinologist.

:( Sorry to hear this!  I hope she can get a handle on it and finds good doctors.
