Stupid Online Class

I vented on Facebook a little bit ago so some of you have seen this there. I'm so fed up with my online class. I usually love my online classes even if they are boring but this one is driving me crazy. I figured it would be my easiest class and of course it's turning into the hardest. We have a crazy amount of homework and at least 50% of it if not closer to 75% is group work. Lots of case studies and group analysis papers to write. And we have one large group project that we turned in our proposal for last week. Apparently 2 of the 5 group members have done a paper on this before and plagiarized their old paper. The teacher found out and docked our grades for it. He even sent us a copy of the paper with the plagiarized parts highlighted, that's how we could tell who did what. So I emailed the teacher asking how we could prevent this in the future, if there were ways we could check our paper for plagiarism to keep group members accountable. His solution is to email him after the papers are graded and if we are penalized to award points to those who didn't cheat and take points away from those who did. While I'm grateful that there is a way we can penalize those who are cheating, this really didn't reassure me at all. I'm probably stressing and making way more of a big deal out of this than it is. I was hoping to get out of the group really. It was only the third week of class.

I just have a crazy amount of homework to do and trying to police my online group is not what I wanted to do. Plus we are trying to get the house ready to sell - that's a whole other post - I can't believe it's already Wednesday night.

I am sorry. That sounds like it sucks. I hope that you can figure it out. I hate group work for this reason. I even have trouble working in groups with really good friends. But at least this is it! Remember, I am usually pretty bored at work, so if you need someone to read over stuff I can!

I didn't even know it was possible to plagarize you own work?!?

According to the dictionary:

Plagiarism is the "wrongful appropriation" and "purloining and publication" of another author's "language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions," and the representation of them as one's own original work.

That is one bullet I managed to dodge this semester. Phew. I HATE any kind of group work.

I hope things get better for you. Hang in there! I feel ya though. I have a crazy ton amount of homework to do to. I've been trying to wade through it. I really just need a day off. Well, no luck till Tuesday. Ick.

Yeah, these days you can't even use a paper from a past class in a future class without it being considered plagiarized >.< You have to site your own papers in future papers. Yay.

I'm sorry. Group work sucks when people plagiarize. So frustrating.

Yep you aren't suppose to be using old papers. but I cannot tell you how many times I have done this. I edited them, and made them fit on what I was talking about, so idk why it matters. I have never sited myself.

Well, like I said, by definition, if you're using your own work, it's not plagarism. You can call it something else, but it's not plagarism. Might be worth having the argument. Professor might be impressed you took the time to research it and learned something and maybe give back some points.

It usually isn't just one professor. Many programs self-define plagiarism in that way. That it is "cheating" to reuse a past paper, even portions, in a future class. I've gone back and used the same references and just re-reference my original source.

My point was that I've seen some professors give points back if you make a good enough argument. Doesn't hurt to try...:)
