Any fellow Jewbies on TN?

Wishing an easy/meaningful fast to those who observe.  May you be sealed in the Book of Life for another year.

Thank you. I've been doing it since I was 10 so I'm used to it. It's not fun by any stretch of the imagination, but it's doable. I honestly think H gets the shit end of the stick; he's the one who has to deal with my crankiness all day.

  • I don't mean to sound ignorant, but can you explain this tradition to me? I am not very familiar with Judaism. I also really love learning about it.
  • BeeLu said:

Yom Kippur is the day of atonement, at the beginning of the Jewish New Year (ten days after Rosh Hashanah). During the week between the two, you make amends and ask forgiveness from people you've wronged. During Yom Kippur itself, you're supposed to fast and reflect on the previous year, and make confessions if you need to. It's the holiest day of the Jewish year.

I'm not Jewish, but DH's family is. I particularly love Yom Kippur, having a whole week in which you reflect and consider your actions within the past year. It's a lovely, introspective time, yet you're not alone because the whole community does it at once.

That's really awesome! I really like that! I love learning about other people's religions and their practices!

  •  I'm not Jewish but that sounds like a great tradition!

  • I came into this post because I didn't know what a jewbie was. Is that common to say that?

I'm not Jewish but I love Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah.  Such a beautiful observance.  :)

I don't know how common the term is, but I've used it with my friends for ages and a have heard it otherwise. Sorry for using unfamiliar slang lol.

  • @pandpmeant2b I did! Thank you for explaining it to me! I had never heard about the reasoning behind the fasting!
  • Thanks @BeeLu and @PandPmeant2B for explaining. I am basically clueless about Judaism, so I've noticed these things on the calendar, but that's about as far as my knowledge about it goes, lol.
  • @PandPMeant2B I didn't know the angels part! That is really beautiful.
