Hiccups v. Kicks

How do you tell the difference?  Do they feel differently or occur at different invervals?

Re: Hiccups v. Kicks

  • I'm not sure I noticed hiccups until later on, but the kicks/jabs are a lot more random and are felt in different places, I notice hiccups in one specific place (by their head, or sometimes I just feel their butt moving from the action), and are repetitive for awhile, and feel less harsh.

  • Great question! I'm interested to know this as well

  • I didn't notice them until about a month after feeling kicks. Hiccups are like rhythmic bubbles popping and I can never feel them from the outside. Once you feel them you'll know what it is.

I can feel the hiccups from the outside, and can see my belly bouncing up and down every time Peanut gets them now. It's pretty entertaining!

  • I always felt hiccups really low and they were very rhythmic. Kicks and jabs were harder and higher up.

  • Sooo...Peanut has hiccups right now. Not even lying. I tried to get it on video, but they weren't strong enough to be that noticeable this time.

  • I didn't feel hiccups until she was already head down and way low and long after kicks. I think I first felt hiccups around 30 weeks. I felt them way low and at the end I felt them in my butt...it was weird. Hiccups were a consistent flicking feeling and were not nearly as strong as kicks.

  • Baby boy gets hiccups often. Like 2-3 times a day and they feel completely different form kicks. They are definitely more rhythmic and there is like 3-5 seconds in between hiccups. And they can last a total of 5-30 minutes long.

I too can feel/see belly moving when he has them. DH even felt him have the hiccups once. At first I was really weirded out by them but now I love when he gets them.

  • I can feel her hiccups from the outside. They do feel like bubbles popping and they are constant.

My doctor said most babies get them around the same time every time they get them. LO usually gets them right before bedtime, DH and I just sit there waiting for them to end.
  • I may be in the minority here, but I HATED baby hiccups in utero.  I thought they were so annoying.  You can definitely tell the difference once you get used to them.  Like Lizzie said, the kicks/jabs were more sporadic.  The hiccups are more rhythmic.  You could see them through my belly too.  Other people always got a kick out of them.

  • hiccups are rhythmic. kicks are not. (and a kick is a general term-it could be an arm, a head butt, etc)
