Happiness or money? Teachers come in!

I have been in the education field for several years but have only held long term sub teacher positions.  Last year, I had a 2 month position and then decided to per diem substitute teach the rest of the year.  It was consistent work but I was never really thrilled and doing it to make money and be present in schools.  This summer I had a hard time finding any type of position in a school and finally got an offer for a part time paraprofessional position.  I was really happy to have an offer and consistency to boot, but it pays less than a day of subbing. There are pros and and cons to both.  Subbing, I have more flexibility and more $, but not as happy. With the para job, I am happier but less money and I am only getting exposure at one school.  What makes the most sense?

  • Happiness, always. You can always negotiate pay with the new job, as well.
  • what state are you in?

  • I'm not a teacher, but happiness in your job/career is the pathway to overall life happiness and life satisfaction. Do what you love. Make enough money to survive and do the other things you love. You decide how those values balance.

  • @theteno  I am also in NJ and have my Master's as well.  Thanks for the advice!
  • I'm a para in WA state working with SpEd preschoolers. I love my job!

I subbed for 2.5 years and hate it. I hated never getting to know the kids well, not knowing the school layout and not getting to know the other staff members because I was constantly moving schools and classrooms.

Where do you want to end up? What's your end goal?
  • I know there isn't much of a pay raise with para professionals....or with substitute teaching. It sounds like you enjoy the flexibility of being a sub. I know I did as well, but it takes a lot of discipline and being comfortable with moving around a lot. The potential with being a para is the possibility of getting a teaching job at that particular school, which happened to a friend of mine.
  • Happiness.

I was in the exact same position as you- but then I found a job as a school librarian. It's not teaching, it's not even full time, and I get paid the same amount as subbing. So in the end, my only positives were that it was a consistant job.

I love it, and I'm so glad I decided to stick here. Besides, teachers know teachers. Even if you are only at one school, you probably will have tons of opportunities to get great recommendations.
