Does home owners insurance cover water damage?

We live in a town house and our neighbors got some water from our shower.  We were 100% sure the problem was fixed, but no such luck =(.  Just curious to know if anything like this is ever covered by insurance?

Re: Does home owners insurance cover water damage?

  • Disclaimer:  All insurance policies are different.

What is usually the case:  Yes, your homeowner's insurance should cover their damage for that type of water damage.  Homeowner's insurance does NOT cover flood damage, that is a separate policy...but it usually covers water damage not related to a flood.

  • Our upstairs toilet pipe leaked down into the kitchen below and it was all covered by homeowners after the deductible.
  • Thank you guys.  I will call my insurance tomorrow and ask.  Keeping my fingers crossed.
  • Insurance adjuster here :) What was the cause ? It really depends on the cause. Things like a broken pipe, sink overflow , etc are generally covered. Things like sump pump failure and ground water are not. Also --- generally the cause of the problem is not covered, just the resulting damage. For instance , if your water heater leaks generally your insurance will covet the resulting damages, but not the water heater itself.

  • It definitely is not a sump pump or anything.,  But looks like it might be some old pipes?

    Thanks for all the replies

  • Britt. Isn't there a special rider you can get for damage due to sump pump failure and the like? I am paying extra for water back up coverage on my homeowners and wondering if this is worth it now.

  • Just saw this, sorry Chicago Bride ! I'm guessing you are in IL? If so , the water back up includes sump pump failure.
