WIJFLT: Soulless (sp)

Ok, so I definitely didn't give it long enough the first time around.  I ended up really enjoying it.  For some reason, I thought it was YA and when it go to the sexy parts, I learned otherwise.  I loved Alexia's sense of humor and Lord Maccon's banter.  It was campy and funny.

The few things that I could have done without was the steampunk and the social class aspects.  I can overlook the steampunk for the story, but I don't think it added anything to it, and I feel like steampunk books always just assume you know what everything is.  The first one I read (which was just plain awful) had me Googling.  Thankfully that paid off because I wouldn't have known what some if it was.  I also thought that the attention paid to social correctness was a little off putting.  It took itself so seriously for a book that doesn't take anything seriously.  It felt a tad over dramatized.

Really though, I enjoyed it for four stars, but I'm bummed that my library doesn't have the audio for number two, because I enjoyed the audio a lot!  I hope I can get around to the next one soon!

  • I knew you would like it! Glad you gave it a second shot :-) This isn't what I normally read but when I did I really enjoyed it and was shocked when you didn't!

  • You haven't read this series yet?!?
I am glad you enjoyed it. They were my first try at reading anything steampunk. I wasn't sure that I would enjoy it, but in the end I really did. I basically just read it like it was a fantasy, I didn't let the steampunk craziness overwhelm me.
This is def not a YA novel. You should also check out the Manga version of this (The comic book, whatever you call it), it was pretty interesting.
  • I'm so happy you tried it again! These books are just so much fun. I agree, at times the steam punk aspects felt just like extra bits, the story could have been awesome without some of it.

I actually really enjoyed the social niceties and proper etiquette during that time frame. It was impossible to take anything too seriously though, but I found it to be pretty hilarious rather than pretentious.

I even bought the graphic novel for Soulless and I love it too. It's the only graphic novel I own, but I love the clothes. Especially for Lord Alkedama and Ivy. It really is a fun series!

  • I finished the second one a while back, and I totally agree. This series is really fun. I'm just trying to find some time to read the rest!
