I May Sound Like A Newb

When I talked to my doctor about TTC back in June, she gave me a pamphlet about first trimester testing. It's done during 11-13 weeks pregnant. I never heard of anyone having them done that early and when asking recently PR friends, none of them were offered it. I've been doing some research, but was wondering if anyone here has experience with having it done.

Sorry if I sound like a newb, just haven't heard of it.

It's pretty standard and is part of the Nuchal Translucency screening, which also goes along with an ultrasound. You'll get bloodwork done to rule out certain chromosonal abnormalities, such as Downs, Cystic Fibrosis, and I'm not remembering the third one right now. The test results won't tell you if the baby has any of these issues, but will give you the percentage chance of baby having one. For Downs, the u/s is also a good indicator, because based on measurements of certain body parts, it can narrow down the risk.

  • That is most likely referring to the n/t scan. It is very common around here. It tests for any markers of downs syndrome and the major trisomys. Mine included an u/s and b/w at 12 weeks and additional b/w after 15 weeks.

Maybe, I was surprised they haven't heard because I've found articles about it dating back to 2003.

ETA: There may be further, I just haven't found them.

  • I didn't have that done but I know from hanging around here that it is the NT scan done around 12 weeks. So if I didn't hang out here I probably wouldn't know about it since none of my friends had it done and my ob's office doesn't make a routine of it.

  • @caseyandlizzie is wise.  We had it done at 12 weeks and I knew about it from being on TN.  My OB had given me a pamphlet around that time if we had wanted to get it done.

  • Yea it's pretty normal. My doctor offered it to us at our first appt for the same time frame. We declined.

  • It was also offered to us. We declined as well.

  • It's pretty standard.  It wasn't even a choice for us.  It is automatically done.  It is a predictive test that combines a blood test with markings on an ultrasound.   It does not rule in or out, but indicates the percentage.  If there is a high probability based upon the results, you can opt for amnio or CVS.

I think some people decline because they would never terminate the baby based on the results, but that is not the reason for the test.  If you do find out you have increased chance, you can have time to prepare and line up services, etc.

DH and I also had blood drawn for genetic testing for both us during 1st trimester to see if we were carriers for over 100 genetic conditions (from fructose intolerance to Sickle Cell Disease.)  It only cost $100 if insurance did not cover it.

  • Mine is today.  We're having it done because DH's mom had 3 second tri miscarriages, all due to genetic issues.  We'd rather know and be able to prepare.

  • My dr doesn't push for them unless you are high risk. But it seems drs here do things differently than some of the other places that nesties are from.

  • Like others said, it's probably part of the N/T test. Some doctors only recommend the test if you're over a certain age. We had it done because it was our first chance to see our baby (my OB doesn't do a dating u/s so we only would have seen the baby at our a/s at 18 weeks).

  • I had the NT scan done at 12 weeks. It is two blood tests and an u/s. While it wouldn't have changed anything, we wanted to know everything was alright because of the effects my medication can cause. We just wanted to be prepared. Our insurance covered it in full.

The only person that mentioned those tests to us was the RN at our first appointment, our doctor didn't even mention them.
